Burdock has three separate histories that rarely get told together: a weed's history, a vegetable's history, and a medicine's history.
The plant
Arctium lappa is a biennial of the daisy family, native to Europe and temperate Asia and long since naturalised across North America. In its first year it puts everything into a deep taproot - that's the part harvested, and it can run a metre down into loose soil. In its second year it throws up a coarse, branching stalk with purple thistle-like flowers, which become the burrs. Those burrs are engineered for a single purpose: each bract ends in a tiny hook, so the seed head clings to fur and fabric and gets carried somewhere new.
The weed that invented Velcro
In 1941 a Swiss engineer, George de Mestral, came back from a walk picking burdock burrs off his dog and his trousers. Curious enough to put one under a microscope, he saw the hooks catching in loops of fabric and hair - and spent years turning that observation into a hook-and-loop fastener. He called it Velcro, from velours and crochet. It is the most famous thing burdock has ever done, and it has nothing to do with health.
The vegetable
In Japan the root is gobo, an everyday supermarket vegetable rather than a curiosity. It's scraped, shaved and stir-fried into kinpira gobo, simmered into nimono stews, fried as tempura, cooked into mixed rice and dropped into miso soup. Korea eats it as ueong. This is centuries of ordinary dietary use by very large numbers of people - the reason burdock's safety record reads the way it does.
The medicine
In Western herbalism burdock root became a standard 'alterative' - a slow-acting herb given over weeks, usually as a decoction, and typically paired with dandelion, yellow dock or nettle. Nineteenth and early twentieth-century texts, including Potter's Cyclopedia (1907) and Grieve's A Modern Herbal (1931), list it for eruptive skin complaints, as a diuretic, and to promote sweating. These same texts are what Health Canada's monograph cites today - which tells you honestly that burdock's permitted uses rest on documented tradition, not on trials.
In East Asia
Chinese medicine uses the seed more than the root, under the name niu bang zi, for sore throats and heat conditions. The 'blood purifier' reputation attached to burdock in the West has a parallel there, and it's a traditional framework rather than a physiological description.
Today
Burdock arrived in the modern supplement world through two doors: the herbal tradition, and Essiac, the Canadian alternative-cancer tea formula it appears in. The second brought it a great deal of attention and none of it evidence-based. The most interesting modern angle is quieter and more solid - that the root is one of the richest food sources of inulin, a prebiotic fibre.
The science, graded honestly
We grade the evidence for every use so you can see the difference between "proven," "promising," and "traditional."
Burdock is a big, coarse, daisy-family plant with a long taproot, and it's that root that gets dried, sliced or extracted. Three things in it are worth knowing about.
## Inulin - the part we're most confident about
Burdock root stores its energy as inulin-type fructans rather than starch. Published analyses put the fructan content of the root in the region of half its dry weight, which makes it one of the richest food sources of inulin alongside chicory and Jerusalem artichoke. Inulin isn't digested in the small intestine; it travels intact to the colon, where gut bacteria ferment it. That is the textbook definition of a prebiotic fibre, and it's the least speculative thing we can say about burdock. It's also why burdock can feel gassy at first for some people - fermentation is exactly what it's supposed to do.
## Polyphenols and antioxidants
The root carries chlorogenic acids, caffeoylquinic acids and quercetin-type flavonoids. These are the compounds behind burdock's antioxidant readings in the lab, and they're the same family of compounds you'd find in coffee or artichoke. Antioxidant activity in a test tube is easy to measure and hard to translate into a health outcome, so we treat it as chemistry rather than a promise.
## Lignans - arctiin and arctigenin
These are burdock's signature molecules and the reason it shows up so often in preclinical papers. In cell and animal studies, arctigenin damps down inflammatory signalling. That work is genuinely interesting, but it has not been carried through into large human trials, and the doses used in labs are not the doses you get from a cup of tea or a scoop of extract.
## The honest summary
Inulin is a food-level mechanism you can rely on. The polyphenols are plausible. The lignan research is early-stage. We'd rather tell you which is which than blur them together.
Traditional use (diuretic, sweating, alterative)
Traditional useThis is the only category where burdock has formal Canadian recognition, and it's worth being precise about what that recognition actually means. Health Canada's oral burdock monograph, last dated 19 December 2025, permits four claims and no others: traditionally used in Herbal Medicine as a diuretic; traditionally used in Herbal Medicine (as a diaphoretic) to induce sweating; traditionally used in Herbal Medicine as an alterative to help remove accumulated waste products via the kidneys, skin and mucous membranes; and traditionally used in Herbal Medicine to help alleviate the pain associated with rheumatism.
Those statements are permitted because of documented historical use, not because trials have demonstrated them. The monograph's own references make this explicit - they are herbal pharmacopoeias and compendia (the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia, Bradley's British Herbal Compendium, Hoffmann's Medical Herbalism, Wichtl, and Wren's 1907 Potter's Cyclopedia) rather than clinical studies. In regulatory language, 'traditionally used' is a claim about the tradition, not a claim about a proven outcome. We think that distinction is the single most useful thing to understand about this whole page.
The tradition itself is old and consistent, which is part of why it survived. Western herbalists from the nineteenth century onward classed burdock as an 'alterative' - a gradual-acting herb given over weeks to support the body's ordinary routes of elimination, typically alongside dandelion, nettle or yellow dock. In Chinese medicine the seed (niu bang zi) rather than the root is the more commonly used part, given for sore throats and heat conditions. In Japan the root is simply food.
The honest position: if you're taking burdock, you're joining a long and well-documented tradition. You are not taking something with proven diuretic or eliminative effects in a modern clinical sense. Health Canada also restricts the diuretic use to occasional use only - a reasonable limit for anything that increases urine output.

PreliminaryThis is the most defensible mechanistic thing about burdock, and also the place where it's easiest to overclaim - so let's separate the two halves carefully.
The composition half is solid. A 2021 review in Food Research International brought together the analytical work on burdock root and confirmed it as a notable commercial-scale source of inulin-type fructans, with fructan making up a large share of the root's dry weight - figures around half are commonly reported, varying with harvest time, cultivar and how the root is stored. Inulin is a chain of fructose units that human digestive enzymes can't break down, so it passes through the small intestine intact and is fermented by bacteria in the colon. That fermentation, and the short-chain fatty acids it produces, is what makes inulin a prebiotic. None of this is in dispute; it's food chemistry.
The outcomes half is where it gets thinner. Inulin as an isolated ingredient has been studied in humans reasonably well. Burdock root specifically, as a source of that inulin, has not. The most relevant work is preclinical: a 2020 study in Microorganisms fed burdock root to mice at different doses and times and tracked their gut bacteria, and found whole burdock root shifted the microbiota more than inulin alone did - suggesting the root's polyphenols may add something. A separate paper isolated a burdock fructooligosaccharide and reported immune-related activity in laboratory models. Both are mouse-and-dish studies.
What this means practically. If your aim is simply to eat more prebiotic fibre, burdock root - especially eaten as a vegetable - is a genuinely good way to do it, and that's a food statement rather than a health claim. If your aim is a specific digestive outcome, the burdock-specific human evidence to support that doesn't exist yet. Also worth knowing: because inulin ferments, going in at a high dose can produce wind and bloating. Start low.
One regulatory note. Health Canada's oral burdock monograph does not include a fibre, prebiotic or digestive claim, so this isn't something we can put on a label - only explain here as nutrition.

PreliminaryThere is one human trial that people cite constantly for burdock, so it's worth describing it properly rather than just quoting the conclusion.
In 2016, Maghsoumi-Norouzabad and colleagues published in the International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases a randomised study of 36 adults aged 50 to 70 with knee osteoarthritis - 10 men and 26 women - split into two groups. One group drank burdock root tea providing 6 grams of root per day for six weeks; the other did not. The researchers measured blood markers rather than symptoms: interleukin-6 and high-sensitivity CRP on the inflammation side, and malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase and total antioxidant capacity on the oxidative-stress side. The burdock group's IL-6 and hs-CRP fell, and their antioxidant measures rose, relative to baseline and to the control group.
Now the caveats, which matter as much as the result. Thirty-six people is very small. Six weeks is short. The outcomes were blood markers, not pain, function or anything a patient would feel. And a tea you can taste is hard to blind convincingly. A separate paper from the same group looked at lipids and blood pressure in the same population. This is a reasonable early signal from one team; it is not a body of evidence, and it has not been replicated at scale.
Around it sits a large preclinical literature. Reviews of Arctium lappa pharmacology catalogue antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, gastroprotective and hepatoprotective activity in cells and animals, most of it attributed to the lignans arctiin and arctigenin and to chlorogenic acid. Memorial Sloan Kettering's own summary of burdock is blunt about the gap: it lists these as preclinical findings and states there is no evidence supporting burdock as a treatment for cancer, infections, diabetes or other medical conditions.
Our read: 'antioxidant compounds are present and one small trial moved some markers' is true and interesting. 'Burdock reduces inflammation' is a step further than the evidence goes, and it isn't wording Health Canada permits for burdock in any case.

Traditional useBurdock's reputation as a skin herb is old, widespread and almost entirely traditional - and the regulatory picture in Canada is more interesting than most people realise, because it splits by route of administration.
For oral burdock, Health Canada permits no skin claim at all. The closest the oral monograph comes is the alterative wording - 'to help remove accumulated waste products via the kidneys, skin and mucous membranes' - which references skin as a route of elimination in traditional theory, not as a condition being treated. There is a separate Health Canada monograph for topical burdock, which does carry traditional wording for helping relieve skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. Those are different products with different rules, and a powder you swallow cannot borrow the topical monograph's claims.
The tradition behind the reputation is real. Nineteenth and twentieth-century Western herbals list burdock root among the standard alteratives for what they called 'scrofulous' or 'eruptive' skin complaints, usually taken as a decoction over several weeks and often paired with dandelion, yellow dock or nettle. The framework was that stubborn skin problems reflected sluggish elimination, and that a gentle alterative helped over time. That's a coherent traditional model. It is not a mechanism that has been demonstrated in modern terms, and 'the skin is an organ of elimination that herbs can unblock' is not how contemporary physiology describes skin disease.
On the modern side there is very little. Memorial Sloan Kettering's review states plainly that evidence is lacking for burdock in eczema and psoriasis. The one clinical dermatology finding it does record is topical and cosmetic: a small study of a cream containing burdock fruit extract reported an improvement in the appearance of wrinkled skin, with MSK noting more studies are needed. That's a cream, containing fruit extract, tested for wrinkles - a long way from an oral root powder for eczema.
So: a genuinely traditional skin herb, taken slowly, with our respect for the tradition and no pretence that it treats a skin condition.

PreliminaryThis one is included as much for safety as for interest, because the same signal that makes burdock sound appealing to some readers is exactly why Health Canada tells people with diabetes to check with a practitioner first.
The preclinical picture is fairly consistent. In animal experiments, burdock root extract has lowered blood glucose and improved carbohydrate tolerance, and reviews of Arctium lappa pharmacology list antidiabetic activity among its documented in vitro and in vivo effects. There are plausible reasons why: the inulin fraction slows the digestion and absorption of carbohydrate the way any viscous or fermentable fibre does, and the polyphenols have their own reported effects on glucose handling in laboratory models.
The human picture is much smaller. Memorial Sloan Kettering records a small study in which a burdock-containing formulation improved post-meal blood glucose and lipid measures in patients with diabetic nephropathy - a combination product, in a specific patient group, from a single small study. That is a long way from evidence that burdock powder lowers blood sugar in the general population, and MSK's own summary states there is no evidence supporting burdock as a treatment for diabetes.
The practical consequence is the important part. Health Canada's oral burdock monograph requires the warning: ask a health care practitioner before use if you have diabetes. The logic is straightforward - if an ingredient may nudge glucose downward and you are already taking medication to push it downward, the two can stack. Anyone on insulin or oral glucose-lowering medication should raise burdock with their prescriber before starting and monitor their readings, rather than assuming a herbal product is neutral.
We can't and won't claim burdock helps with blood sugar. We're flagging it because a possible effect is a possible interaction.

If you want one reason to feel relaxed about burdock, it's this: millions of people eat it as dinner.
In Japan it's called gobo, and it's an ordinary supermarket vegetable - long, muddy, pencil-thin roots sold in bundles. The classic dish is kinpira gobo: the root is scraped rather than peeled, shaved into matchsticks, soaked briefly to stop it browning, then stir-fried with carrot, soy sauce, mirin, sesame and a little chilli. It also goes into nimono stews, tempura, takikomi gohan (mixed rice) and miso soup. Korean cuisine uses it too, as ueong.
The flavour is the surprise. People expect something medicinal and get something closer to artichoke heart crossed with parsnip - earthy, faintly sweet, with a snap to it. Cooked long, it turns tender and almost nutty.
Why this matters for a supplement page: a plant with a centuries-long, high-volume food history has been through the largest safety trial there is. It doesn't prove burdock does anything in particular, and we're not going to pretend it does. But it does mean burdock isn't an exotic novelty compound - it's a root vegetable that herbalists also happened to use.
One more piece of trivia that isn't medical at all: burdock's hooked seed burrs, which cling stubbornly to dog fur and trouser legs, are what inspired Swiss engineer George de Mestral to invent Velcro.
Who burdock suits - and who should skip it
It may suit you if
You like the idea of eating more prebiotic fibre and want it from a whole root rather than an isolated powder.
You're drawn to traditional Western and East Asian herbalism and want the classic 'alterative' herb, taken the way it's traditionally taken - gently, over weeks, usually as a tea.
You already cook with gobo, or want an easier way to get burdock in when you can't find fresh root.
You're building a simple, food-first routine and prefer plants with a long dietary history.
It probably isn't for you if
You're pregnant. Health Canada lists this as a straight contraindication, not a caution.
You have a ragweed, chrysanthemum, daisy, marigold or chamomile allergy - burdock is in the same Asteraceae family and cross-reactions are documented, including one reported case of anaphylaxis after eating boiled burdock.
You're on diabetes medication, diuretics, or you're being managed for a kidney condition. Speak to your practitioner first.
You want a fast, obvious effect. Burdock is not that kind of ingredient.
You're looking for something to treat a diagnosed condition. It isn't a treatment for anything, and we won't suggest otherwise.
Burdock vs the herbs it's usually shelved beside
vs dandelion root
The closest comparison, and they're often sold together. Both are Asteraceae taproots, both are inulin-rich, and both carry Health Canada traditional-use diuretic wording. Dandelion root is more bitter and is traditionally aimed at digestion and bile flow; burdock is sweeter, more food-like, and is traditionally the 'skin and lymph' herb. If you dislike bitterness, burdock is the easier one to drink.
vs chicory root and Jerusalem artichoke
These are burdock's rivals purely as inulin sources, and if prebiotic fibre is your only goal they deliver it more cheaply and in larger doses. What burdock adds is its polyphenol and lignan fraction, plus its traditional-use profile. One mouse study found whole burdock root shifted gut bacteria more than isolated inulin did, hinting the other compounds contribute - but that's a mouse study, and we'd want human work before leaning on it.
vs nettle
Nettle is the other classic gentle 'spring tonic' herb. Nettle leaf is mineral-rich and has its own Health Canada traditional diuretic wording; burdock brings the fibre. Plenty of traditional blends contain both.
vs our mushroom extracts
Different job entirely. Our mushroom powders are about beta-glucans and immune-related traditional use; burdock is a fibre-and-polyphenol root with a much thinner modern research file. If you're deciding where to spend first and you want the better-studied option, the mushrooms have more human data behind them. We'd rather say that plainly than sell you both.

This one deserves the full story, because a real event has been retold until it means the opposite of what happened. In 1978, Bryson and colleagues reported in JAMA that a 26-year-old woman developed blurred vision, a dry mouth, inability to pass urine and confused behaviour after drinking a packaged burdock root tea. These are textbook anticholinergic signs. Readers wrote in to point out that burdock contains no atropine-like alkaloids - and they were right. The FDA then analysed the product and found atropine in it, at a level giving an estimated dose of about 2.28 mg, well above a typical adult antispasmodic dose. The atropine is thought to have come from belladonna or a related nightshade being picked or processed along with the burdock. The patient recovered with treatment. So the accurate sentence is: a contaminated commercial tea caused an atropine poisoning, and burdock was the label on the box, not the cause. Memorial Sloan Kettering frames it the same way and draws the real lesson - poor quality control is a major concern with commercial herbal products. Why 'mostly myth' rather than 'myth': the underlying risk is genuine, it's just a different risk than people think. It's a sourcing and testing problem, not a plant problem. 'Blood purifier' is a real historical term, and burdock genuinely earned it - in a system of thought that predates modern physiology. Nineteenth-century herbals used 'alterative' and 'blood purifier' to describe slow-acting herbs believed to improve the body's overall constitution over weeks. It's a description of a traditional category, not a measurable process. Blood is filtered by the kidneys and processed by the liver, continuously, without herbal assistance. No supplement 'purifies' it, and there is no clinical measure by which burdock has been shown to do so. Memorial Sloan Kettering notes the blood-purifier reputation as a traditional use of burdock fruit in Chinese medicine - historical context, not a demonstrated effect. Health Canada's wording is carefully built to respect the tradition without endorsing the mechanism: 'traditionally used in Herbal Medicine as an alterative to help remove accumulated waste products via the kidneys, skin and mucous membranes.' Notice that every part of that sentence is framed as tradition. That's the most we're permitted to say, and honestly the most anyone should say. If you see burdock sold as a detox or blood-cleansing product, that seller is going further than the evidence and further than Canadian regulation allows. Burdock is one of the herbs in Essiac, a Canadian herbal tea formula promoted since the 1920s as an alternative cancer treatment. That association is the source of most of burdock's cancer reputation, and it is not evidence. Memorial Sloan Kettering's review of burdock opens with an unambiguous statement: there is no evidence to support the use of burdock to treat cancer, infections, diabetes or other medical conditions. Essiac itself has not been shown in controlled clinical trials to benefit people with cancer. What does exist is laboratory work. Burdock lignans - particularly lappaol F and arctigenin - have been shown to arrest the cell cycle and trigger programmed cell death in cancer cell lines in dishes, and there is animal work on arctiin. This kind of finding is common, important for drug discovery, and routinely fails to translate into a human treatment. A compound killing cells in a plate says nothing about what a cup of tea does in a body. We want to be completely clear: burdock is not a cancer treatment, we make no such claim, and no Canadian natural health product may. Burdock's food history is genuinely reassuring, and we lean on it elsewhere on this page. But 'it's a food' and 'it's safe for everyone' are not the same sentence. Three groups need to be careful. First, anyone with a daisy-family allergy: burdock is an Asteraceae, so people who react to ragweed, chrysanthemum, marigold, daisy or chamomile can cross-react. Allergic contact dermatitis to burdock is documented, and there is a published case of anaphylaxis in a 53-year-old man about an hour after eating boiled burdock. Health Canada's monograph requires the instruction to stop use if allergy or hypersensitivity occurs. Second, pregnancy. Health Canada lists this as a contraindication - do not use if you are pregnant - not a soft caution. Animal work indicates burdock extract can stimulate uterine smooth muscle. Breastfeeding parents are told to ask a practitioner first. Third, people with diabetes, who the monograph directs to a practitioner before use. A fourth point worth knowing: a concentrated supplement is not the same exposure as a portion of vegetable. How much
Health Canada's oral monograph allows adults 18 and over the equivalent of 1.2 to 18 grams of dried root per day, from dry, powdered or non-standardised extract preparations (dry extract, tincture, fluid extract, decoction, infusion). Our extract is 10:1, so about one gram of powder stands in for roughly ten grams of dried root - well inside that range. Follow the label rather than chasing the ceiling. For context, the most-cited human study used a tea supplying 6 g of root per day for six weeks. If you're using burdock for its traditional diuretic purpose, Health Canada specifies occasional use only. Start at the low end and build over a week or two: burdock is inulin-rich, and inulin ferments in the gut, so a sudden full dose can mean wind or bloating. Timing is flexible - with food is kindest on the stomach.

Burdock is cheap, which is precisely why it's worth checking a label. Four things to look for:
Botanical identity testing. The one serious burdock incident on record was a contaminated tea, not the herb itself - so a supplier who identity-tests raw material and batch-tests the finished product is doing the thing that actually matters here.
Root, and Arctium lappa specifically. Health Canada's oral monograph covers Arctium lappa root. Leaf, seed (niu bang zi) and related species are different materials with different traditional uses.
A stated extract ratio and equivalence. A good label tells you both the ratio (10:1) and the dried-root equivalent, so you can see where you sit against the 1.2-18 g/day range. 'Proprietary blend' with no numbers tells you nothing.
Contaminant testing. Burdock is a root, and roots take up what's in the soil - heavy metal testing is a fair thing to ask for.
And the honest tip: if you can buy fresh gobo locally, do that sometimes too. It's a better dinner than any powder.

And start low: burdock is high in inulin, which ferments in the gut and can cause wind or bloating if you jump straight to a full dose.
No - and the real story is worth knowing. In 1978 JAMA published a case of a woman who developed anticholinergic symptoms after drinking a packaged burdock tea. Burdock doesn't contain atropine-like alkaloids, and readers said so at the time. The FDA then tested the product and found atropine in it, most likely from belladonna or a related nightshade being harvested or processed alongside the burdock. It was a contamination event. Memorial Sloan Kettering describes it the same way and draws the practical lesson: quality control is the real issue with commercial herbal products. Buy from suppliers who identity-test their raw material and test finished batches.
Check with your practitioner first, and be cautious. Burdock belongs to the Asteraceae (daisy) family, along with ragweed, chrysanthemum, marigold, daisy, echinacea and chamomile, and cross-reactivity within that family is well recognised. Memorial Sloan Kettering specifically notes that people allergic to chrysanthemums may show cross-sensitivity to burdock. Allergic contact dermatitis from burdock is documented in the literature, and there is a published case of anaphylaxis in a 53-year-old man about an hour after eating boiled burdock - he recovered with treatment. Health Canada's monograph requires the instruction to stop use if hypersensitivity or allergy occurs. If you have a significant daisy-family allergy, this is one to skip.
Not in pregnancy. Health Canada's oral burdock monograph lists it as a contraindication - the required label wording is 'do not use if you are pregnant.' The concern is that animal studies indicate burdock extract can stimulate uterine smooth muscle, which Memorial Sloan Kettering links to a theoretical risk of premature delivery. Note that this applies to concentrated herbal preparations; it isn't a warning about eating an ordinary portion of gobo, though it's still sensible to raise anything you're unsure about with your midwife or doctor. If you're breastfeeding, the monograph requires you to ask a health care practitioner before use rather than ruling it out.
There are three worth raising with your prescriber. Diabetes medication: animal studies show burdock extract can lower blood glucose, and Health Canada requires the warning to ask a practitioner before use if you have diabetes - the concern is that a herbal effect could stack with your medication. Diuretics: burdock is traditionally used as a diuretic, and the monograph requires products to warn that a diuretic effect may occur, so combining it with a prescription diuretic, or taking it while unwell and not drinking enough, isn't a good idea. And anything kidney-related: if your kidney function is being managed, run it past your team first. As a general rule, tell every one of your prescribers about every supplement you take.
If you can get fresh gobo and you enjoy cooking, that's a lovely way to take it, and we'd never talk you out of it. Scrape rather than peel the root, shave it into matchsticks, soak briefly so it doesn't brown, and stir-fry it with carrot, soy, mirin and sesame - that's kinpira gobo, a Japanese home-cooking staple. It also goes into stews, tempura and miso soup. It tastes earthy and faintly sweet, somewhere between artichoke heart and parsnip. The extract exists for the times fresh gobo isn't available or convenient: a 10:1 powder gives you a consistent, measurable amount of root in a spoonful, and stirs into water, tea, soup or a smoothie. Neither is 'better' - the food is more pleasant, the extract is more practical.
About our Burdock Root Extract 10:1
Ours is a 10:1 water extract of Arctium lappa root - the part Health Canada's oral monograph covers. A 10:1 ratio means roughly ten grams of dried root went in for every gram of finished powder, so a small scoop stands in for a much larger amount of raw root.
## What that means for dosing
Health Canada's monograph allows adults 18 and over the equivalent of 1.2 to 18 grams of dried root per day, using dry, powdered or non-standardised extract preparations. At 10:1, one gram of extract is equivalent to about ten grams of dried root - comfortably inside that range. Follow the label; there is no benefit to pushing the ceiling.
## What we do and don't claim
On the label and on this page we stay inside the permitted traditional-use wording: traditionally used in Herbal Medicine as a diuretic, to induce sweating, as an alterative to help remove accumulated waste products via the kidneys, skin and mucous membranes, and to help relieve rheumatic pain. That is the complete list of what may be claimed in Canada for oral burdock. We don't claim it detoxifies, purifies blood, clears skin conditions, balances hormones, or affects any disease.
## How to use it
Stir into water, into a mug of hot water as a quick tea, or into a smoothie or soup. It's earthy and mildly sweet and disappears easily into savoury food. Start with a small dose - inulin-rich foods can cause wind and bloating if you go in hard - and build up over a week or two.

- Quality, not the plant: The 1978 'burdock tea poisoning' was caused by atropine contamination of a commercial tea - most likely belladonna picked or processed with the burdock - not by burdock itself, which contains no atropine-like alkaloids. The lesson is sourcing: buy identity-tested, batch-tested material.
- If symptoms persist: Ask a health care practitioner if symptoms persist or worsen. Not for anyone under 18.
The bottom line
Burdock is a well-loved traditional herb and a genuinely good vegetable, with a modern evidence file that is much thinner than the internet suggests.
What's solid: it's a food with a long safety history, it's unusually rich in inulin, and Health Canada recognises a specific set of traditional herbal uses for it.
What's early: the antioxidant and inflammatory-marker findings rest largely on one small six-week trial in 36 people with knee osteoarthritis, plus a lot of laboratory and animal work. Interesting, not settled.
What's not true: it does not purify blood, it is not a cancer treatment, and it is not inherently toxic - the poisoning scare traces to a contaminated product, not to the plant.
So: a sensible, gentle, food-grade addition if you like the tradition and the fibre. Not a fix for anything. If you want the strongest evidence per dollar in our range, that isn't burdock - and we'd rather you knew.
