Why I Started Ecogenya — And Why Quality Is the Only Thing I Care About

I didn't set out to start a supplement company. That was never the plan. But sometimes the path you're meant to walk finds you before you find it — and for me, that path ran straight through a difficult chapter of my own health.

The Beginning: A Personal Reckoning With My Own Health

A few years ago, I was running on empty. Not in the dramatic, bed-ridden sense — more in the way that so many of us live: perpetually fatigued, mentally foggy, immune system constantly sputtering. I was functional, but I wasn't thriving. I was managing, but I wasn't well. And I had a creeping sense that the body I was living in wasn't operating the way it was supposed to.

I tried the usual routes. Doctors. Blood panels. Lifestyle adjustments. Some things helped at the margins. But the turning point — the real one — came when I started researching medicinal mushrooms. Not out of desperation, exactly, but out of genuine curiosity about what traditional medicine had known for centuries that modern Western health culture seemed to have quietly set aside.

What I found was remarkable. Decades of peer-reviewed research on Turkey Tail and immune function. Clinical studies on Lion's Mane and neurological health. Centuries of recorded use of Reishi as an adaptogen across Chinese, Japanese, and Korean medicine traditions. This wasn't fringe science. This was a body of knowledge that had simply been overlooked in favour of pharmaceutical approaches.

I started taking mushroom supplements. And I noticed changes — real, measurable shifts in how I felt, how I recovered, how my mind worked. I became something of an obsessive about it. I read everything I could find. I spoke to researchers. I dug into the biochemistry of beta-glucans and triterpenoids. And the more I learned, the more I realised something troubling.

Quality supplement products arranged with care and intention

The Problem I Couldn't Ignore

The supplement market, particularly in the mushroom space, is full of products that simply don't work. Not because the mushrooms themselves don't work — the science on that is solid — but because what's inside most bottles isn't what the label implies.

Here's what I kept running into:

  • Mycelium on grain: Many so-called "mushroom supplements" aren't made from mushrooms at all. They're made from mycelium — the root structure of the fungus — grown on grain (typically oats or brown rice) and then ground up, grain and all. The result is a product that's primarily starch, with very little of the beta-glucans and bioactive compounds that give mushrooms their value. The starch tests as polysaccharides, which allows brands to list impressive-sounding numbers on their labels. It's not technically fraud. But it's deeply misleading.
  • Underdosed products: Even products made from actual fruiting bodies were often dosed far below the levels studied in research. A pretty bottle with a low price point and a 100mg dose isn't helping anyone.
  • Single extraction: Many bioactive compounds in mushrooms require different extraction methods to be rendered bioavailable. Water extraction pulls beta-glucans. Alcohol extraction pulls triterpenoids. A product that's only water-extracted is leaving significant value behind. Most brands skip the dual-extraction step because it costs more.
  • No third-party testing: Company-funded testing, or no testing at all. No independent verification of what's actually in the product.

I was frustrated. Not just as a consumer, but on behalf of everyone who was spending money on these products hoping they would help — and not getting what they paid for. That frustration is what built Ecogenya.

Building What I Wished Existed

I made myself a simple promise when I started: I would never compromise on the things that actually matter. Fruiting body only — no mycelium on grain, ever. Dual-extraction, always. Third-party tested for potency and purity, because I'm not asking anyone to take my word for it. No fillers, no artificial additives, no shortcuts.

These aren't marketing talking points. They're the actual cost of doing things properly. Fruiting body mushrooms are more expensive to source than mycelium on grain. Dual-extraction adds complexity and cost. Third-party testing isn't free. I accepted all of that as the baseline — not as a premium feature, but as the minimum standard for a product I'd be proud to put my name on.

Because that's exactly what I've done. My name. My family. My standards.

What "From Our Family to Yours" Actually Means

Our tagline — from our family to yours — isn't a slogan I hired someone to write. It reflects something I genuinely believe about what this company is and who it's for.

When I formulate a product at Ecogenya, I'm thinking about who's going to take it. I'm thinking about whether I'd give it to my own family. Would I give this to someone I love and trust that it's doing what it says? That question filters every decision I make.

And family, of course, includes animals. When I expanded into pet supplements, it wasn't a business pivot driven by market research. It was a natural extension of the same philosophy. Our pets are part of our families. They deserve the same quality standards we hold for ourselves — the same fruiting body mushrooms, the same dual-extraction, the same third-party testing. There is no "good enough for pets" tier at Ecogenya. The standard is the standard.

The Environmental Mission Is Not an Afterthought

I'll be honest: when I launched Ecogenya, I knew I couldn't build a company that ignored its environmental footprint and still feel good about what I was doing.

The supplement industry generates an enormous amount of plastic waste. Billions of HDPE bottles, most of which end up in landfill. I made the decision early on to use kraft packaging — compostable, made from renewable materials, and representing a 97% reduction in plastic compared to conventional supplement bottles. It costs more. I've accepted that.

We also plant two trees for every single order, through our partnership with Eden Reforestation Projects via theGoodAPI. Not as a carbon offset gimmick — but as a genuine, verified commitment to restoring ecosystems that the modern economy has damaged. Every order you place results in two trees planted in high-need reforestation areas around the world.

These decisions aren't about marketing. They're about the kind of company I want to run and the kind of world I want to leave behind.

Where Ecogenya Is Going

My vision for Ecogenya is simple, even if the execution is not: I want to be the company that people point to when they want to know what a supplement brand with genuine integrity looks like. I want every product in our line to be something I'd stake my reputation on — because I am staking my reputation on it, with every single batch.

We're growing. The pet supplement line is newer and I'm incredibly proud of how it's been received. We're expanding our human mushroom line thoughtfully, not frantically. We're investing in better tools, better testing, better relationships with the suppliers who share our standards.

And through all of it, the thing that doesn't change is the reason I started: because quality matters, because people deserve to know what they're putting in their bodies, and because a supplement company can be built with both rigour and conscience.

I'm glad you're here. And I hope Ecogenya earns your trust the same way it earned mine — one honest product at a time.
