Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus) is one of the foundational herbs of traditional Chinese practice, where the root is known as huang qi and has been used for centuries as a tonic herb.

Ours is a 10:1 extract: ten parts root to one part finished powder. It is water-soluble, so it dissolves cleanly into tea, broth or warm water rather than settling at the bottom of the cup. The taste is mildly sweet and beany, which is why it has traditionally been simmered into soups and congee as easily as taken as a tea.

  • 10:1 root extract — 10 parts root to 1 part powder
  • Pure, water-soluble extract powder
  • Single ingredient — no fillers, flavours or additives
  • Vegan, non-GMO
  • Third-party tested for heavy metals — COA on this page
  • Sizes from 36 g through to bulk 6 kg and 10 kg
  • Made in Canada from imported ingredients

Who it's for: people following traditional Chinese herbal practice, home cooks building broths and tonic soups, and bulk buyers and formulators.

How to use: Stir 1/2 to 1 teaspoon into hot water, tea or broth. It also simmers well into soups and stocks.

Cautions: Consult a health care practitioner before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, taking prescription medication, or if symptoms persist or worsen.

A tree is planted with every Ecogenya order.

Detailed Description

Astragalus membranaceus, known in Traditional Chinese Medicine as Huang Qi or “Yellow Leader,” has been used for thousands of years as one of the most respected Qi-tonic herbs. It is valued for its ability to strengthen the body’s natural defences, support energy production, and promote overall resilience.

Our 10:1 Astragalus Extract is crafted by concentrating ten parts of the whole root into one part of pure extract, capturing the full spectrum of naturally occurring compounds — including saponins, polysaccharides, and flavonoids. These active constituents work in harmony to help your body adapt to physical and environmental stress while maintaining energy and balance throughout the day.

Astragalus is often referred to as a “protector herb” for its role in supporting vitality and long-term wellness. In traditional practices, it is believed to nourish the spleen and lungs, support healthy circulation, and restore depleted Qi — the body’s vital life force. Modern herbalists value Astragalus as a gentle daily tonic that promotes endurance, strengthens resilience, and supports the body during seasonal transitions.

At Ecogenya, we source our Astragalus from trusted growers and extract it using water-based methods to preserve its purity and potency. The result is a highly concentrated, water-soluble powder that blends easily into smoothies, teas, or wellness tonics, providing a simple and effective way to incorporate this time-honoured root into your daily routine.

Fruiting body vs Mycelium and Spores

There is a lot of discussion around which parts of the mushroom should be used for extraction. Here is a short explanation:
In mushrooms, the part that is typically used for extracting nutrients and compounds is the fruiting body, which is the visible part of the mushroom that emerges above ground. This is because the fruiting body contains most of the bioactive compounds, including vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other beneficial substances.

The fruiting body is rich in nutrients and bioactive compounds because it is where the reproductive structures of the mushroom develop. These structures contain various substances that the mushroom needs for growth and reproduction, as well as compounds that help defend against pathogens and predators.

However, it's worth noting that different parts of the mushroom may have different nutritional profiles and concentrations of bioactive compounds. For example, some mushrooms also produce mycelium, the underground network of fungal threads, which can also contain valuable nutrients and compounds. Additionally, certain species of mushrooms may have medicinal properties associated with specific parts of the organism, such as the mycelium or even the spores. Therefore, the specific part of the mushroom used for extraction can depend on the desired nutrients or compounds and the intended use.

We always use the fruiting body for our extracts but we are also working on developing special compound extracts from other parts like the mycelium and spores. Keep an eye on our blogs and subscribe to our newsletter to get notified of these advancements as they happen.
