TCM tradition
A hard, lacquered, blood-red mushroom too woody to eat and far too bitter to enjoy - which people have been simmering into tea for two thousand years anyway, and calling the mushroom of immortality. Here's the honest version: what tradition actually claims, what the research genuinely found (including the parts that didn't work), what Health Canada permits us to say, and how to use it well. No hype, no BS.

Reishi didn't become famous because it tasted good or fed anyone. It became famous because it was rare, it was beautiful, and it was impossible to eat - which, in ancient China, made it something closer to a talisman than a food. Here's the fuller picture.
What it is and how it grows
Ganoderma lucidum is a bracket fungus - a shelf mushroom that grows out of the sides of hardwood trees rather than up from the ground. The Latin name means 'shining,' and it earns it: mature caps carry a hard, varnished, red-brown surface that genuinely looks lacquered. The fungus lives inside dead and dying hardwoods, especially oak, breaking down the wood for years before it ever pushes out a visible shelf. In the wild it favours hot, humid forests across Asia, and finding one was historically a matter of luck - which is a large part of why it acquired the reputation it did.
The name, and the mountain of meaning attached to it
In Chinese it is Ling Zhi. 'Zhi' refers to a class of auspicious fungi; 'ling' carries a sense of spirit, divinity or efficacy - so the name lands somewhere near 'divine mushroom.' In Japan it is Reishi, and also Mannentake, the ten-thousand-year mushroom. It first appears in the written record in the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing, the Divine Farmer's Materia Medica, where it is placed in the superior class of herbs - the ones described as tonics for long-term use rather than medicines for acute illness. That classification, more than any single claim, is why reishi has always been framed as something you take steadily over years.
A symbol before it was a supplement
Because it was scarce and unmistakable, reishi became one of the most reproduced motifs in Chinese art. It's carved into furniture and jade, embroidered onto robes, painted into scrolls of immortals and cranes. The ruyi - the curved ceremonial sceptre associated with good fortune - takes its head shape from the lingzhi cap. Genuine specimens were reserved for emperors and the very wealthy, and there are records of finds being presented at court as omens. When you read that reishi was 'the mushroom of immortality,' this is what that actually refers to: a symbol of longevity and auspicious fortune, not a documented claim that anyone lived forever.
How it was actually used
Here the romance gives way to practicality. Reishi is woody and hard - you cannot chew it, and nobody in history tried to. It was sliced and simmered for hours into a bitter decoction, sometimes soaked in wine or spirits. Those two methods, water and alcohol, are not folklore: they map exactly onto the chemistry we now understand, since the beta-glucans need hot water and the triterpenes need alcohol. Traditional preparation got there by trial and error, centuries before anyone could name the molecules.
Cultivation changed everything
For most of its history reishi was rare enough to be effectively unavailable. That ended in the 1970s, when growers in Japan and China worked out how to reliably cultivate it on hardwood logs and sawdust blocks. Within a couple of decades a mushroom that had been a royal curiosity became a mass-market ingredient, and China became the world's dominant producer. Almost everything sold today is cultivated - which is good news for wild populations, and the reason the quality questions on this page are about extraction and species rather than about foraging.
From symbol to study
Reishi is now the most-researched medicinal mushroom in the world, with thousands of published papers. Most of that work is in cells and animals. The human trials are fewer, smaller and more mixed than the volume of literature suggests - which is exactly why the rest of this page grades the evidence claim by claim rather than pointing at the pile and calling it proof.
The science, graded honestly
We grade the evidence for every use so you can see the difference between "proven," "promising," and "traditional."
Reishi is not one active ingredient. It's two very different families of molecules that happen to live in the same woody mushroom, and knowing which is which explains almost everything about how reishi is made, tastes and behaves.
## The sugars: beta-glucans
The first family is polysaccharides - long chains of sugar - and the ones that matter are called beta-glucans. Your immune system did not evolve alongside supplements, but it did evolve alongside fungi, and it carries receptors on cells like macrophages that recognise fungal beta-glucan as 'this is a fungus.' When those receptors are engaged, the cells switch on a normal, ordinary alert response: they signal to each other, and measures of immune-cell activity shift. That is the honest mechanism behind every 'mushrooms support immunity' sentence you have ever read - not a boost, but a nudge to a system that is already running.
Beta-glucans are water-soluble and locked inside tough fungal cell walls made of chitin - the same material as an insect shell. Human digestion cannot break chitin efficiently. This is exactly why reishi has been simmered for hours in Chinese kitchens for centuries, and why modern products use a hot-water extract: heat and water are what free the sugars.
## The bitter part: triterpenes
The second family is the triterpenes - in reishi's case a large group called ganoderic acids. These are what make reishi genuinely, memorably bitter. They are fat- and alcohol-soluble rather than water-soluble, which is why a good product often uses a dual extraction: hot water for the beta-glucans, then alcohol for the triterpenes. In laboratory work the triterpenes are the ones associated with liver-cell protection, calming effects on signalling in the nervous system, and mild effects on platelets - which is also, importantly, where the blood-thinner caution comes from.
## Why nothing happens overnight
Neither family works like a drug. There is no stimulant, no sedative compound, no receptor being switched hard on or off. What reishi appears to do is shift the background - immune signalling, antioxidant capacity in the blood, stress response - slightly, over weeks. In the human studies that did find something, the timeframe was four to sixteen weeks of daily use. If you take reishi on a Tuesday and feel nothing by Wednesday, the product isn't failing you; that's simply not how this ingredient behaves.
## The adaptogen idea, plainly
'Adaptogen' is Health Canada's own permitted language here, and it's worth translating. It doesn't mean energising and it doesn't mean sedating. It means the traditional use is to help you cope over time with mental and physical fatigue related to stress. That's a slow, background claim - and it's the honest frame for reishi.
Immune support & antioxidants
Emerging but limitedThis is the claim Health Canada permits, and it's also the one with the most real laboratory support - so it's worth separating what has been measured in a test tube from what has been measured in a person.
In the lab, the picture is consistent. Reishi's beta-glucan polysaccharides activate immune cells - macrophages, T lymphocytes, natural killer cells - and set off the ordinary signalling cascade those cells use. Memorial Sloan Kettering's clinical summary describes the mechanism in some detail: reishi induces natural killer cell activity against cancer cell lines by switching on receptors called NKG2D and NCR, and its polysaccharides increase the display of MHC class I molecules on tumour cells. That is genuine, replicated cell biology. It is not, however, a demonstration that anything useful happens in a healthy person who drinks reishi tea.
In people, the studies are smaller and shorter. The clearest human work comes from Hong Kong, where researchers gave healthy volunteers reishi and measured what happened in their blood. In a controlled supplementation study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, plasma antioxidant capacity rose measurably after taking reishi - both after a single dose and after ten days of daily use - with no change in markers of liver or kidney stress. That is a real, measured, human effect, and it is the direct basis for the permitted 'source of antioxidants' wording. It is also a modest one: a shift in a blood measurement, not a change in how often anyone got sick.
On the immune side specifically, the best human data comes from an unusual place - the Cochrane review of reishi in cancer patients. Pooling five randomised trials, the reviewers found that reishi increased the percentages of CD3, CD4 and CD8 lymphocytes. So immune markers do move in people, not just in dishes. What nobody has done is the study most buyers actually care about: a large trial in healthy adults measuring whether reishi means fewer colds, fewer sick days, or faster recovery. Until that exists, 'supports the immune system' is a traditional-use claim with plausible mechanism behind it, not a proven outcome.

Emerging but limitedThis is reishi's strongest human evidence, and it's also the claim Health Canada actually permits - reishi is approved as 'an adaptogen to help increase energy and resistance to stress over time.' Here's the study behind that idea.
In 2005, researchers in China ran a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 132 people diagnosed with neurasthenia - a formal diagnosis in the international classification of diseases, describing persistent fatigue, weakness and poor recovery after effort. Half received a standardised reishi polysaccharide extract, 1,800 mg three times a day; half received identical placebo. Neither the patients nor the researchers knew who got which. After eight weeks, 123 people were still assessable. On the clinicians' global severity rating, the reishi group improved by 15.5 per cent from baseline versus 4.9 per cent on placebo. On the participants' own sense of fatigue, reishi improved 28.3 per cent versus 20.1 per cent on placebo. Sense of well-being rose 38.7 per cent versus 29.7 per cent.
Read those numbers carefully, because they tell an honest story. Reishi beat placebo - but placebo did quite a lot on its own, and the gap between them on fatigue was under nine percentage points. That's a real effect, and a modest one.
A second, smaller trial points the same direction in a different group. A 2012 pilot study randomised 48 women with breast cancer who were on endocrine therapy and struggling with cancer-related fatigue, giving one group reishi spore powder for four weeks. Using standard fatigue and quality-of-life questionnaires, the reishi group reported less fatigue, better physical well-being, and less anxiety and depression than controls, with no serious side effects. But 48 people, four weeks, and a single centre is a pilot - the authors said so themselves.
The honest limitation across both: these were people who started out unwell and fatigued. Nobody has shown that reishi does anything measurable for the tiredness of an otherwise healthy person with a busy week.

Traditional useThis is the most common reason people buy reishi, and it has the weakest evidence on this page. We'd rather say that clearly than let it slide.
The tradition is genuine and very old. In Chinese medicine reishi is Ling Zhi, and its classical use is to nourish the Heart and calm the shen - the spirit or consciousness. Health Canada's monograph reflects this: it permits the TCM sentence about nourishing the Heart and strengthening qi and blood 'to treat Heart and Spleen deficiencies that manifest in insomnia, forgetfulness, fatigue, listlessness and poor appetite.' That is the only place the word insomnia appears, and it's inside a traditional-pattern description - it is not permission to say reishi helps you sleep. In practice, this has always been an evening ingredient: a bitter, woody decoction taken before bed.
The modern evidence is thinner than the tradition suggests. Sleep has usually been measured as a side note rather than a main outcome - in the neurasthenia trial, sense of fatigue and well-being improved, and in the breast cancer pilot the insomnia item on a quality-of-life questionnaire moved more in the reishi group than in controls. Both are secondary findings in small studies, in people with a specific condition. The animal work is more direct - mice given reishi extracts fall asleep faster and sleep longer, with the effect apparently running through the gut microbiome and serotonin - but mice are not a reason to make a human claim.
There is one newer piece of evidence people will encounter. In 2026, a trial of 218 adults with chronic insomnia comparing a reishi extract standardised to 6 per cent triterpenes against melatonin was presented as a late-breaking abstract at the SLEEP conference, reporting a larger drop in insomnia severity scores with reishi. We're flagging it because it's the biggest sleep study reishi has ever had - but a conference abstract is not a peer-reviewed paper, we cannot read its full methods, and it changes nothing about what's permitted in Canada. If it survives peer review, we'll upgrade this grade. Until then, sleep remains a traditional use.
One more honest wrinkle: insomnia is also listed among reishi's reported side effects. A minority of people find it does the opposite of what they expected.

Traditional useReishi is permitted in Canada as 'a liver tonic,' and that phrasing is doing careful work. It is a herbal-medicine use claim, resting on a long tradition and on textbook references, not on a modern trial showing improved liver function in people.
What exists is preclinical. In mice, reishi extracts have shown hepatoprotective effects - reducing liver damage from toxins such as cadmium, and protecting liver and kidney tissue under chemical stress. The triterpene fraction is generally credited with this. That's a plausible, reproducible animal finding, and it's the scientific basis people point to. What does not exist is a randomised human trial in which people with liver disease took reishi and their liver measurements improved. Memorial Sloan Kettering's clinical summary lists hepatoprotective activity explicitly as an in vitro and in vivo finding - lab and animal - and does not list a human liver outcome.
There is a genuinely uncomfortable counterweight here, and it belongs in this section rather than buried in the safety notes. Reishi has been linked to liver injury in a small number of published case reports. A 2004 report from Hong Kong described hepatotoxicity from a reishi formulation. In 2007, Thai clinicians reported a fatal case of fulminant hepatitis in a patient taking lingzhi mushroom powder. In both cases the patients had taken traditionally boiled lingzhi for a long time with no trouble, and became ill within one to two months of switching to a powdered preparation. A 2023 case report described acute liver injury in a person using reishi alongside alcohol.
Set that against the scale of use - reishi is consumed by millions of people worldwide - and these remain rare events. But they are the reason we treat the liver tonic claim as tradition rather than proof, and the reason we'd tell anyone with existing liver disease, or who drinks heavily, to speak to their doctor before starting.

Emerging but limitedWe are including this because it is the single most-searched question about reishi, and because a serious, independent body has actually looked at it. Nothing here is a claim we make about our product - reishi is a food supplement, no cancer claim is permitted in Canada, and nothing on this page should be read as suggesting reishi treats, prevents or cures any disease. What follows is simply what the research found.
The Cochrane Collaboration - the international group that produces the most rigorous evidence reviews in medicine - published a review of Ganoderma lucidum for cancer treatment, updated in 2016. The reviewers found five randomised controlled trials with 373 participants in total: three in people with advanced lung cancer, one in people who had surgery for rectal cancer, and one in people with a mix of cancers. Pooling them, patients who had reishi extract added to their chemotherapy or radiotherapy were about 1.27 times more likely to respond to that treatment than those who did not. Immune markers - CD3, CD4 and CD8 lymphocyte percentages - increased, and quality of life after treatment was relatively better in the reishi groups. Reishi used on its own showed no significant effect on tumour shrinkage.
And now the part that matters most. Cochrane graded that evidence as low to very low quality. In their own words, it was unclear whether some of the studies had properly randomised participants at all, and very few people contributed data to each outcome. Cochrane's conclusion was not 'reishi works'; it was that the present evidence is insufficient to justify using reishi as a first-line cancer treatment, and that it could be considered as an alternative adjunct only alongside conventional treatment, with more well-designed trials needed. A 2023 systematic review of medicinal mushroom supplements in cancer reached a similar verdict: further research is needed to determine safety and effectiveness.
There are also practical hazards in this setting that get too little airtime. Reishi may interact with immunosuppressant drugs and, in theory, with chemotherapy agents that work through free radicals. Reishi spore powder has been shown to elevate the tumour marker CA72-4, which can confuse monitoring. If you are in treatment, this is a discussion for your oncology team - not a decision to make from a supplement page.

PreliminaryYou will find reishi marketed for cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar. This one has actually been tested properly, and it didn't hold up. We think that deserves a section of its own, because negative results almost never get one.
In 2015, Cochrane published a review specifically on Ganoderma lucidum for cardiovascular risk factors. The reviewers pooled five randomised placebo-controlled trials covering 398 people, all of whom had type 2 diabetes, using doses of roughly 1.4 to 3 grams a day for 12 to 16 weeks. Across the primary outcomes - HbA1c (a three-month average of blood sugar), fasting plasma glucose, blood pressure, triglycerides and the cholesterol profile - there was evidence of no effect. The reviewers also judged the overall quality of the studies to be poor, and noted there was inadequate evidence to determine whether reishi is even safe in this population. Their conclusion was blunt: the existing randomised evidence does not support using reishi for cardiovascular risk factors.
A later trial reinforced it. In 2016, the same lead researcher ran a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial of reishi in people with metabolic syndrome, published in Scientific Reports - and again found no meaningful benefit for the cardiovascular risk factors measured. A separate study in women with fibromyalgia found reishi did not influence blood or body-composition measurements either.
The honest limitation cuts both ways: all of this work was done in people who already had metabolic disease, at moderate doses, over a few months. It is conceivable that reishi behaves differently in different people over longer periods. But that is speculation, and the evidence we actually have points to no effect. Health Canada permits no cholesterol, blood pressure or blood sugar claim for reishi - and on this evidence, it shouldn't.

Reishi tends to suit
People who feel wired and worn out at once, and want something in the calm direction rather than the caffeine direction.
People building a slow, daily wellness routine and happy to judge it after two months, not two days.
Anyone drawn to the traditional side of things - reishi is the classic evening mushroom, taken as a bitter tea before bed.
People who already like Lion's Mane or Cordyceps in the morning and want a counterweight at night.
Reishi is probably not for you if
You want a noticeable, same-day effect. You will be disappointed, and you should be told that up front.
You take blood thinners or antiplatelet medication - reishi may add to their effect. Talk to your practitioner first.
You take immune-suppressing medication, or you've had an organ transplant. Reishi's whole reputation is for nudging the immune system, which is the opposite of what those drugs are for.
You are pregnant or breastfeeding. There simply isn't good safety data.
You have an existing liver condition, or you drink heavily. There are rare case reports of liver injury linked to powdered reishi, and that's not a risk worth taking casually.
You are living with cancer or in active treatment. Reishi is genuinely studied in this setting, but the evidence is weak and the interaction questions are real. That's a conversation for your oncology team, not a supplement decision made alone.
How it compares
Reishi vs the other functional mushrooms
For calm, evening wind-down and stress resilience: Reishi. This is its lane, and no other mushroom in the range competes for it.
For focus and nerves: Lion's Mane - the one with the nerve-growth research story.
For energy, stamina and exercise: Cordyceps. If reishi is the evening mushroom, cordyceps is the morning one.
For everyday immune and antioxidant support: Turkey Tail, or a blend.
For skin hydration and moisture: Tremella.
Most people don't choose between them. Reishi at night alongside Lion's Mane or Cordyceps in the morning is the most common pattern we see.
Reishi vs other calming botanicals
Ashwagandha has more human trial data for perceived stress specifically, and works faster for most people.
Valerian, Hops, Passionflower and California Poppy are traditional sleep herbs - they act more directly on winding down at night.
Reishi is slower and more background than any of these. It is not a substitute for a sleep herb; it's a long-game tonic.
Extract vs powder vs spores
Dual extract (hot water plus alcohol): the most complete option, because it captures both the beta-glucans and the bitter triterpenes.
Hot-water extract: gets the beta-glucans, which is what the immune side needs. A solid, traditional choice - it's essentially concentrated reishi tea.
Plain dried powder: closest to whole food, but the chitin cell walls limit how much your body can actually access. It also has the weakest safety record - the rare liver case reports involved powdered preparations rather than traditional decoctions.
Spore powder: sold at a premium and popular in Asia. Spores must be 'cracked' (sporoderm-broken) to be usable at all, and there's a practical catch - reishi spore powder has been shown to raise a blood tumour marker called CA72-4, which can confuse cancer test results. Worth knowing before you buy.
What Health Canada actually allows
Canada is unusually strict here, and we think that's a good thing - it means the wording on a label has actually been reviewed. Reishi sits in Health Canada's 'Mushrooms' monograph under its Latin name, Ganoderma lucidum, and the monograph sets out exactly which sentences a Canadian product is permitted to use.

What is not permitted
There is no approved Canadian claim that reishi improves sleep, reduces anxiety, lowers cholesterol or blood pressure, or does anything at all in cancer. The word 'insomnia' does appear in the monograph, but only inside a traditional-medicine sentence about Heart and Spleen deficiency - it is a description of a TCM pattern, not a modern sleep claim, and it can't be lifted out and used on its own.
The permitted dose range
The monograph is specific. For the adaptogen or liver tonic claims: 1.5-6 g of dried mushroom per day as a powder or ethanolic extract, or 3-15 g per day as an aqueous (hot-water) extract. For the immune support claim: 3-15 g per day as an aqueous extract. TCM claims: 1.5-6 g of dried fruiting body per day, or 3-15 g as a decoction. The direction for use is simply: take with food. The only mandatory warning for reishi is to stop use if hypersensitivity or allergy occurs.

A few things worth flagging if you work with clients, or if you're the sort of person who reads the fine print.
The interactions are the real story
Reishi's cautions are not theoretical hand-waving. Memorial Sloan Kettering's About Herbs database lists three interactions that matter: anticoagulants and antiplatelets (reishi may increase bleeding risk, and reishi extracts have been reported to prolong INR, PT and APTT), immunosuppressants (reishi may work against them), and chemotherapy agents (reishi raises plasma antioxidant capacity, which in theory could matter for drugs that rely on free radicals). Health Canada's own monograph doesn't mandate a blood-thinner warning for Ganoderma lucidum specifically, but the pharmacology and the clinical literature both point the same way, so we flag it anyway.
Watch the lab-test problem
Reishi spore powder has been documented to elevate CA72-4, a serum tumour marker used in gastrointestinal, ovarian, endometrial and lung cancers. Patients have had abnormal results traced back to a supplement. If someone is being monitored with tumour markers, this needs to be on the chart.
Powder is not the same as decoction
The published liver-injury cases share a pattern that is easy to miss: patients had taken traditionally boiled lingzhi for long periods without trouble, then switched to a powdered preparation and developed hepatotoxicity within one to two months. One case was fatal. It is a small number of reports against enormous global use, so this is rare - but it argues for well-made extracts from reputable suppliers over unverified raw powder, and for stopping immediately if someone develops nausea, dark urine, or yellowing of skin or eyes.
Set the expectation curve honestly
Reishi is a poor fit for anyone expecting a felt effect. The trials that found anything ran four to sixteen weeks. Tell people that at the start, or they'll quit at week two and conclude it doesn't work - which, on that timescale, is a conclusion the evidence can't actually support either way.

Reishi contains no sedative compound and does not act like a sleeping pill. Its calming reputation comes from Traditional Chinese Medicine, where Ling Zhi is used to nourish the Heart and calm the shen, and from animal studies where mice fell asleep faster. In people, sleep has mostly been a secondary measure in small trials. Health Canada permits no sleep claim for reishi. Awkwardly, insomnia is also listed among reishi's reported side effects - so a minority of people experience the opposite. Treat it as a slow evening tonic, not a knockout. Not remotely. Reishi's two active families dissolve differently: beta-glucans need hot water, triterpenes need alcohol. A hot-water extract and a dual extract genuinely contain different things. Raw powder contains both but locks them behind indigestible chitin cell walls. Grain-grown mycelium products carry leftover starch that inflates a 'polysaccharide' number without delivering beta-glucan. Red reishi is the right thing to look for, but not because other colours are counterfeit. Classical Chinese texts describe several coloured 'zhi' - red, black, purple, white, yellow, blue - and these correspond to different Ganoderma species and relatives. Red is the one that maps to Ganoderma lucidum, the species named in Health Canada's monograph and the one nearly all the research used. So 'red reishi' is really shorthand for 'the studied species.' Reishi is well tolerated by most people, and Health Canada's only mandatory warning for it is to stop use if an allergy occurs. But 'well tolerated' is not 'risk-free.' Reported side effects include nausea, dry mouth, constipation, itching, dizziness and insomnia. There are published case reports of liver injury linked to powdered reishi, including one death. Reishi may increase bleeding risk with blood thinners and may work against immune-suppressing medication. And spore powder can elevate a tumour marker used in cancer monitoring. Health Canada's permitted daily ranges for Ganoderma lucidum, by use: Adaptogen or liver tonic: 1.5-6 g of dried mushroom per day as a powder or ethanolic extract; 3-15 g per day as an aqueous (hot-water) extract. Immune support: 3-15 g per day as an aqueous extract. TCM claims: 1.5-6 g of dried fruiting body per day, or 3-15 g per day as a decoction. Source of antioxidants / fungal polysaccharides: up to 6 g per day of dried powder. In practice: 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of powder stirred into tea, coffee, warm milk or broth. Concentrated extracts are dosed far lower by weight than the raw-mushroom figures above - follow the label, not the monograph numbers. Timing and consistency: the monograph's one direction for use is take with food. There's no stimulant and no sedative compound, so morning or evening both work - most people follow tradition and take it in the evening. Reishi is a consistency ingredient: the human trials that found anything ran 4 to 16 weeks of daily use. Give it two months before you judge it. Adults 18 and over.

Reishi is an easy ingredient to sell badly. Five things worth checking on any label:
Beta-glucans, not just 'polysaccharides.' Beta-glucan is the measure that means something. A bare polysaccharide number can be padded with leftover starch from grain-grown mycelium.
Fruiting body over grain-grown mycelium. The actual mushroom is where the triterpenes sit, and Health Canada's TCM claims for reishi specify the fruiting body only.
The right species. You want Ganoderma lucidum on the label - the red reishi, and the species almost all the research used. Its cousin Ganoderma applanatum is a different ingredient with a lower permitted dose and fewer permitted claims.
Extraction, stated. Hot-water extraction gets the beta-glucans; alcohol gets the triterpenes; a dual extract gets both. A '10:1 extract' with no method and no beta-glucan percentage is telling you nothing verifiable.
Third-party testing. Look for heavy-metal testing and a verified beta-glucan content. Mushrooms take up what's in their substrate.
And one taste test: real reishi is unmistakably bitter. If it isn't, ask what's actually in the jar.

Reishi is a hard, woody, kidney-shaped mushroom with a glossy red-brown cap that looks lacquered - its Latin name, Ganoderma lucidum, literally means 'shining.' It grows on hardwood trees in hot, humid forests across Asia and is now cultivated worldwide. It is far too tough to eat as food, which is why it has always been simmered into a bitter tea rather than cooked. In China it's Ling Zhi; in Japan, Mannentake. It has been used in Chinese medicine for more than two thousand years and appears in Chinese art as a symbol of longevity - which is where the nickname 'mushroom of immortality' comes from.
In Canada, reishi is permitted as a liver tonic, as support for the immune system, as an adaptogen to help increase energy and resistance to stress over time, and as a source of antioxidants and immunomodulating fungal polysaccharides. That's the approved wording, and it's the honest ceiling on what anyone can tell you. Underneath it, the research shows measurable but modest effects: a rise in the blood's antioxidant capacity, shifts in immune-cell markers, and improvements in fatigue and general well-being in small trials. What it does not do is act fast or feel like anything on day one. Its most famous use - sleep and calm - rests mainly on tradition rather than proof.
Health Canada's permitted ranges are a good anchor. For the adaptogen or liver tonic use: 1.5 to 6 grams of dried mushroom per day as a powder, or 3 to 15 grams per day as a hot-water extract. For immune support: 3 to 15 grams per day as a hot-water extract. Concentrated extracts are dosed much lower by weight because they are concentrated - always follow the label rather than the raw-mushroom numbers. The monograph's direction for use is simply: take with food. In practice, half a teaspoon to a teaspoon stirred into tea, warm milk or coffee is the usual serving. Most people take it in the evening, following tradition, though nothing in the science requires that.
Longer than most people expect, and there is nothing to feel in the meantime. The human trials that found anything ran four to sixteen weeks: the neurasthenia study measured its results at eight weeks, the cancer-related fatigue pilot at four. Antioxidant changes in blood have shown up faster - within days - but that's a lab measurement, not a sensation. Give reishi a solid two months of daily use before deciding. If you're expecting a same-evening effect, reishi is the wrong ingredient and we'd rather tell you now.
For most healthy adults, yes, at sensible doses and taken with food. A double-blind placebo-controlled safety study (Wicks et al., American Journal of Chinese Medicine, 2007) gave healthy volunteers 2 grams of reishi extract twice a day for ten days with monitoring of blood chemistry, blood counts, urine and ECG, and it was well tolerated. Health Canada's only mandatory warning for reishi is to stop use if hypersensitivity or allergy occurs. The reported side effects are mostly mild: nausea, dry mouth, constipation, itching, dizziness - and, unexpectedly, insomnia in some people. The serious concerns are rare but genuine: a small number of published cases of liver injury linked to powdered reishi, including one fatal case. Stop and see a doctor if you develop nausea with dark urine or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding - there isn't enough safety data, so it's best avoided. Anyone taking blood thinners or antiplatelet medication, or heading into surgery, because reishi may add to their effect. Anyone on immune-suppressing medication, or who has had an organ transplant, since reishi's whole reputation runs the other way. Anyone with an existing liver condition or heavy alcohol use, given the case reports. Anyone with a known mushroom allergy. And anyone in active cancer treatment or being monitored with tumour markers should speak to their oncology team first - reishi spore powder can elevate the CA72-4 marker and confuse results. Yes, in a few specific ways worth knowing. Memorial Sloan Kettering's About Herbs database lists three. Anticoagulants and antiplatelets, such as warfarin: reishi can increase bleeding risk, and reishi extracts have been reported to prolong INR, PT and APTT - so it can also affect those blood tests. Immunosuppressants: reishi may enhance immune response, working against what the drug is doing. Chemotherapy: reishi raises plasma antioxidant capacity, which in theory could matter for drugs that work through free radicals. There is also lab evidence that reishi polysaccharides inhibit the liver enzymes CYP2E1, CYP1A2 and CYP3A, which handle a great many medications - the real-world relevance of that is not known, but it is a good reason to check with a pharmacist if you take several prescriptions.
The fruiting body is the actual mushroom: the hard red-brown cap. It's where the triterpenes are concentrated and where the traditional use has always pointed - Health Canada's TCM claims for reishi specify the fruiting body only. Mycelium is the root-like network the fungus grows through wood; when grown commercially it's usually cultivated on grain, and the leftover grain gets ground in with it. That starch can inflate a 'total polysaccharides' figure on a label without adding any beta-glucan, which is why the beta-glucan number matters more than the polysaccharide number. Health Canada permits both fruiting body and cultured mycelium for the immune, adaptogen and liver tonic claims. Spores are the reproductive dust; they have a tough outer shell that must be cracked to be usable, they're sold at a premium, and they carry the specific caveat of raising the CA72-4 tumour marker. Our own preference is fruiting body, extracted.
Bitter. Genuinely, unmistakably bitter, with a woody, earthy edge - that's the triterpenes, and it's a sign you're getting the real thing rather than a diluted one. Traditionally it was drunk as a bitter decoction, and plenty of people still take it that way. If bitterness isn't your thing, it disappears well into cocoa, chai, a strong coffee, or warm milk with honey and cinnamon; a pinch of cinnamon or a little maple syrup rounds it off nicely. Store the powder as you would any dried botanical: in an airtight container, somewhere cool, dark and dry, away from the stove and out of direct sunlight. Keep the scoop dry - moisture is what makes powders clump and spoil. Used that way it keeps well for its full shelf life.

- Liver: Rare but real: published case reports link powdered reishi to liver injury, including one fatal case of fulminant hepatitis. Notably, those patients had used traditionally boiled lingzhi without trouble before switching to powder. Avoid if you have liver disease or drink heavily, and stop immediately if you develop nausea with dark urine or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
- Pregnancy & breastfeeding: Not enough safety data - best avoided. Ask a health care practitioner before use.
- Allergies: Health Canada's one mandatory warning for reishi: stop use if hypersensitivity or allergy occurs. Skip it entirely if you have a known mushroom allergy.

The bottom line
Reishi has the longest resume and some of the thinnest proof, and both of those things are true at once.
What's solid: it is an approved Canadian natural health product ingredient with permitted wording as a liver tonic, an immune support, an adaptogen and a source of antioxidants. Two thousand years of continuous use in Chinese medicine is real history, not marketing. Short human studies have shown measurable rises in plasma antioxidant capacity, and shifts in immune-cell markers.
What's genuinely promising but unproven: fatigue and general well-being. The best trial - 132 people with neurasthenia over eight weeks - found a real but modest improvement over placebo. Cancer-related fatigue trials point the same way, at pilot scale.
What's mostly tradition: sleep and calm. This is the single most common reason people buy reishi, and it's the claim with the least solid human evidence behind it. We'd rather say that plainly than sell you a story.
What's been tested and didn't hold up: cholesterol and blood sugar. A Cochrane review of five trials in people with type 2 diabetes found no effect.
So: a slow, bitter, gentle evening tonic with deep traditional roots, modest modern support, and a small number of real cautions. Take it with food, take it daily, give it two months, and judge it on how you feel over a season rather than over a week.
