TCM tradition
Not a mushroom you'd recognise - a pale, potato-like mass that grows hidden on pine roots, and one of the most-used herbs in the whole of Chinese medicine. Fu Ling turns up in roughly one in ten preparations in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, almost always as a supporting ingredient rather than the star. Here's the honest version: a genuinely rich two-thousand-year tradition, a surprisingly thin modern evidence file, what Health Canada actually permits, and how to use it sensibly. No hype.
In one minute
Poria (Fu Ling) isn't a cap-and-stem mushroom. It's a dense, potato-like underground mass called a sclerotium that grows on pine roots.
It is one of the most-used herbs in all of Chinese medicine - roughly one in ten preparations in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia contains it.
Its traditional job is to 'drain dampness' (a mild diuretic and digestive steadier) and to 'calm the heart' for restlessness and sleep.
Almost all of its use, historically and today, is inside multi-herb formulas rather than on its own.
Modern evidence is mostly laboratory and animal work. Human trials of Poria by itself are scarce, and reviewers say there isn't enough to recommend it for any specific indication.
Health Canada permits immune-support, fungal-polysaccharide and antioxidant claims, plus specific Traditional Chinese Medicine traditional-use wording - and nothing beyond that.

What it actually is
Poria is not a mushroom in the ordinary sense. Wolfiporia extensa - long known as Poria cocos - is a wood-decay fungus that rarely fruits. What it builds instead is a sclerotium: a dense, pale, potato-shaped survival mass, hidden underground on the roots of pine trees. It can reach 30 cm across and weigh around a kilogram. The texture is soft and slightly elastic, the flavour bland and faintly sweet, and it is harvested and dried in the shade.
Two thousand years of use - almost always in company
Fu Ling has been in continuous documented use for roughly two millennia. Around one in ten of the medicinal preparations listed in the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China contains it. It appears in formulas that are still prescribed today: Wu Ling San ('Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria') and Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan ('Cinnamon Twig and Poria Pill'), both traceable to Zhang Zhongjing's Han-dynasty writings roughly 1,800 years ago, and Si Jun Zi Tang, the four-ingredient digestive base that hundreds of later formulas build on. The pattern never changes: Poria is the supporting ingredient, the one that drains excess fluid so richer tonic herbs sit comfortably and the formula works as a whole.
One fungus, four medicines
Traditional practice doesn't treat the sclerotium as a single substance. The brown outer skin, fu ling pi, is used most strongly for fluid. The reddish layer beneath it is chi fu ling. The white body is bai fu ling, the everyday Fu Ling. And the core grown around the pine root itself is fu shen - 'spirit of the fu' - the part specifically reserved for calming the mind and for sleep. Very few modern products make that distinction.
Hunted, then farmed
Because Poria fruits so rarely, foragers never looked for mushrooms - they looked for the buried mass, probing pine-forest soil and reading the sound and resistance beneath. Today almost all supply is cultivated: pine logs are buried and inoculated, and the fungus builds its sclerotium over one to two growing years. China produces the large majority of the world's Poria, with Anhui, Yunnan, Hubei and Sichuan the main regions; Yunnan's 'Yun Ling' is traditionally graded highest, and analytical comparisons of growing regions support real differences in polysaccharide and extractable content.
The North American twin
The same fungus grows wild across the eastern and southern United States, where it acquired the names 'tuckahoe' and 'Indian bread' - its starchy interior was ground and used as a famine food. One honest caveat: 'tuckahoe' was also the name for an unrelated plant, arrow arum (Peltandra virginica), and older sources confuse the two constantly. What is certain is that this quiet underground fungus has a history on both sides of the Pacific.
What modern science made of it
Chemists have found two main groups in Poria: polysaccharides, chiefly the beta-glucan pachyman, and lanostane-type triterpenes - pachymic acid, dehydropachymic acid, polyporenic acid C and around 120 relatives catalogued so far. Pharmacology has explored diuretic, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulating and antioxidant activity, largely in cells and animals. What hasn't followed is human trial evidence for Poria on its own, which remains, honestly, very thin.
The science, graded honestly
We grade the evidence for every use so you can see the difference between "proven," "promising," and "traditional."
## Two very different families of compounds
Poria is unusual among the mushrooms people take. It has two well-characterised chemical groups: polysaccharides - mainly pachyman, a beta-glucan - and lanostane-type triterpenes, including pachymic acid, dehydropachymic acid, polyporenic acid C and tumulosic acid. Around 120 triterpenoids have been catalogued from it so far.
The two groups behave differently and, importantly, dissolve differently. The polysaccharides come out in water. Most of the triterpenes need alcohol. That single fact explains a lot of the confusion between Poria products, and it's why Health Canada sets completely different dose ceilings for a decoction versus an ethanolic extract.
## The 'drains dampness' effect
The traditional job of Fu Ling is to move stagnant fluid. Modern work does support a real but mild diuretic action - and almost all of it is in rats. Ethanol and water extracts of the sclerotium's surface layer increased urine output in rats. A separate rat study proposed a mechanism: turning down aquaporin-2, one of the water channels the kidney uses to reabsorb water, through the vasopressin pathway.
That's a plausible, coherent story. It is also entirely preclinical. No good human trial has measured how much extra urine an everyday dose of Poria actually produces in a person.
## The 'calms the heart' effect
Fu Ling's second traditional role is settling restlessness and sleeplessness. This is where the most human data sits - which is not saying much. A 2024 randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial gave 70 adults with poor sleep a daily drink containing Poria, jujube seed and GABA for four weeks and reported longer measured sleep time and better Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores. Encouraging - but it tested a three-ingredient combination, so it cannot tell us what Poria on its own contributed.
## The immune angle
Poria's beta-glucans are the basis of Health Canada's permitted 'fungal polysaccharides with immunomodulating properties' wording. In the lab, these polysaccharides activate macrophages and shift cytokine signalling. There's a wrinkle worth knowing: natural, highly branched pachyman is fairly inert, and it's the chemically modified versions - debranched, carboxymethylated, sulfated - that show the strongest activity in studies. So lab results on modified pachyman don't automatically transfer to the plain powder in your cupboard.
## What we honestly don't know
We don't know how much of any of this survives digestion at everyday doses. We have no dose-response data in humans. And we have almost no trials of Poria used by itself. Read this section as 'here is why the traditional practice might make biological sense' - not as proof of an effect in you.
Fluid balance & urination
PreliminaryThis is Poria's defining traditional action, and it is the one modern pharmacology has looked at most closely. It is also, unhelpfully, an area where nearly all the evidence is in rats.
A 2012 study in rats compared ethanol and aqueous extracts of the sclerotium's outer surface layer and found measurable increases in urine output. A separate rat study went after the mechanism, giving an aqueous extract of the surface layer to rats with chronic heart failure for one and four weeks; urine output rose significantly and urine osmolality fell, and the authors linked this to suppressed expression of renal aquaporin-2 - one of the water channels the kidney uses to pull water back out of urine - via the vasopressin V2 receptor pathway. A 2017 study likewise reported increased urine output plus increased sodium and chloride excretion after oral ethanol extracts in rats. Later reviews of Poria's triterpenoids have gathered this work under the heading of renoprotective and diuretic pharmacology.
So the animal picture is reasonably consistent and mechanistically coherent. What's missing is people. There is no good human trial measuring how much extra urine an ordinary daily dose of Poria produces, at what dose, or over what timeframe. Independent reference sources reviewing Poria conclude that clinical studies are lacking to recommend its use for any indication, and that most clinical work involves multi-ingredient preparations from which Poria's own contribution cannot be separated.
What you can honestly take from this: the traditional claim is old, specific, internally consistent, and now has a plausible biological explanation behind it. Health Canada acknowledges the effect enough to require a 'diuretic effect may occur' statement on labels. But 'plausible and traditionally used' is a very different thing from 'proven in humans at a known dose,' and that gap is why we've graded this Preliminary rather than higher.

PreliminaryIn classical Chinese medicine this is a real and specific indication. The Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China lists Poria for 'disquietude of heart spirit' and insomnia, and Health Canada reproduces that wording in its monograph as permitted traditional-use text. Traditionally the calming role belongs particularly to fu shen - the part of the sclerotium that has grown around the pine root - rather than to Poria generally.
The best human evidence is a 2024 randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in Food Science & Nutrition. Seventy adults with sleep complaints took either placebo or 10 mL a day of a preparation combining Poria cocos, Ziziphus spinosa (jujube seed, the classical partner herb for sleep) and GABA, for four weeks. Total sleep duration measured by wrist actigraphy rose and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores improved substantially. Examine.com's summary of the same study reaches the same reading: sleep quality parameters improved.
The limitation is obvious and important. This was a three-ingredient formula, and both jujube seed and GABA have their own claimed effects on sleep, so we cannot attribute the result to Poria. The trial was also small and short.
Beyond that, the picture is animal work: purified Poria polysaccharides and triterpenoid extracts have reduced depression-like behaviour in mice and rats, generally via anti-inflammatory mechanisms, in several separate studies. Interesting, but a long way from a person taking a spoonful of powder.
The fair summary: a long, specific traditional use for restlessness and sleep, one small combination trial pointing in a positive direction, and no trial at all of Poria on its own. Don't expect it to work like a sleep aid, and don't expect it to work quickly.

Emerging but limitedThis is the area where Poria has a regulator behind it. Health Canada's monograph permits 'Used in Herbal Medicine to support the immune system' and 'Source of fungal polysaccharides with immunomodulating properties,' citing Rios 2011, Hobbs 2003, Hoffmann 2003 and Wasser 2002. So in Canada this is a legitimate, licensed statement - which is not the same as a proven clinical effect.
The underlying science is a large and genuinely active laboratory literature. Poria's main polysaccharide is pachyman, a beta-glucan. In cell and animal studies, Poria polysaccharides activate macrophages and alter cytokine output, with proposed routes through TLR4 and NF-kappaB signalling; one paper identified a distinct immunomodulatory protein from Poria acting through TLR4 in mouse peritoneal macrophages. Reviews of the species collect dozens of such findings.
There is a catch that most product marketing skips. Native pachyman - the polysaccharide as it comes out of the sclerotium - is highly branched and shows little activity on its own. Much of the striking laboratory work uses chemically modified derivatives: debranched, carboxymethylated or sulfated versions engineered in the lab to be more soluble and more active. Those aren't what's in a jar of Poria powder.
Human data is close to non-existent. The one clinical study we could find gave a Poria polysaccharide fraction to male collegiate wrestlers and examined the immune response under dehydration - a narrow, unusual setting that tells you very little about everyday use. There is no trial showing that taking Poria reduces how often people get ill.
So: a real mechanism, a large preclinical literature, a Health Canada-permitted claim, and essentially no clinical proof. 'Emerging but limited' is the honest grade.

Traditional useThis is the second pillar of Poria's traditional identity, and it's the reason it turns up in so many formulas. Health Canada's monograph permits several distinct traditional-use statements here: 'to strengthen the spleen and harmonize the middle burner: for spleen deficiency compounded by dampness with symptoms such as loss of appetite, diarrhoea, and epigastric distention,' and 'to strengthen the spleen and transform phlegm.' The Pharmacopoeia wording it also reproduces names spleen deficiency, reduced food intake, sloppy stool and diarrhoea.
The classical logic is worth understanding, because it explains Poria's formula behaviour. Rich tonic herbs can sit heavily; Poria's job is to drain the excess fluid that makes them feel that way, so the formula as a whole is better tolerated. That's why it appears in Si Jun Zi Tang, the four-ingredient base digestive tonic that hundreds of later formulas are built from.
Modern support is thin and indirect. There is animal work suggesting Poria polysaccharides act on the gut microbiota - one study in ob/ob mice found an insoluble sclerotium polysaccharide improved metabolic markers via microbiota changes - and older pharmacology identified antiemetic principles in Poria. Neither of these amounts to evidence for digestive benefit in a healthy person, and no human trial has tested it.
We've graded this 'Traditional use' deliberately. It is a well-documented, centuries-old, regulator-acknowledged traditional indication with no modern clinical trial behind it. Treating it as anything more would be dishonest.

Reasonably supportedOf everything on this page, this is the claim with the firmest footing - because it's the most modest one. 'Source of antioxidants' is a compositional statement, and it's straightforward to demonstrate analytically. Health Canada includes Wolfiporia extensa in its mushrooms monograph under exactly that heading, alongside 'source of fungal polysaccharides.'
The underlying measurements are routine. Poria extracts show antioxidant activity in standard assays; one commonly cited comparison tested Poria alongside Angelica sinensis and Lycium barbarum and found measurable activity for all three. Reviews of the species list antioxidant activity among its consistently reported properties, attributed mainly to the lanostane triterpenes and to phenolic constituents. Analytical work comparing Poria from different Chinese growing regions found meaningful variation in polysaccharide and extractable content between them, which is a useful reminder that not all material is equivalent.
Here's the part that gets glossed over elsewhere. Antioxidant activity in a test tube does not automatically mean antioxidant activity in your body. Compounds have to survive digestion, be absorbed, and reach relevant tissue at relevant concentrations - and for Poria's triterpenes in particular, absorption data is sparse. So 'reasonably supported' here means: it is well established that Poria contains antioxidant compounds and that Health Canada permits us to say so. It does not mean there is trial evidence that eating Poria changes oxidative markers in people.

Poria is a background herb, not a headline act. That shapes who it suits.
It may suit you if
You're working with a practitioner of Chinese medicine and Fu Ling is part of - or the base of - your formula. This is by far the most common and most authentic way to use it.
You cook with it. Poria has been eaten as food for centuries: simmered in soups and congee, or milled into the flour for fu ling cakes. It's bland and neutral, so it disappears into savoury food.
The traditional picture of 'dampness' rings true for you - that heavy, puffy, sluggish, foggy feeling after rich food or in humid weather - and you want something gentle and food-like rather than strong.
You want an ingredient from the mushroom family that is calming rather than stimulating.
It probably isn't for you if
You want a single ingredient with a clear, proven, measurable effect. Poria isn't that, and we won't pretend otherwise.
You're after a nootropic, an energy lift, or a proper sleep aid. None of those are its traditional or its modern profile.
You take a prescription diuretic, or you manage blood pressure, kidney or heart conditions with medication. Speak to your prescriber first - see the safety section.
You're pregnant or breastfeeding. There simply isn't safety data, and Health Canada's guidance is to consult a practitioner.
A note on expectations
Most people who take Poria on its own notice very little - and that's consistent with what it is. In its own tradition it's a harmoniser: it makes the other herbs in a formula work better and sit more comfortably. Judging it as a solo supplement is a bit like judging a stock cube on its own.
How it compares
Poria vs reishi
These two get lumped together, and they shouldn't be. Both are woody, non-culinary fungi in the order Polyporales, and both are used in Chinese medicine for calm - so the confusion is understandable. But:
Different organisms. Reishi is Ganoderma lucidum. Poria is Wolfiporia extensa, long known as Poria cocos.
Different tissue. Reishi is a fruiting body - the shelf you see on a log. Poria is a sclerotium: a dense underground survival mass the fungus builds on pine roots. You're consuming completely different parts of completely different fungi.
Different taste. Reishi is famously, aggressively bitter. Poria is bland and neutral, which is exactly why it can go into food.
Different traditional role. Reishi is a shen tonic taken as a headline herb in its own right. Poria is a formula workhorse - a mild diuretic and digestive steadier that supports whatever it's combined with.
Different evidence base. Reishi has more human trials, though its own evidence is far from settled. Poria has fewer.
If you want calm with more research behind it, reishi is the better-studied choice. If you want the classical Chinese formula ingredient, that's Poria.
Poria vs other calming botanicals
Ashwagandha and L-theanine have far more direct human trial data for stress and calm. Poria doesn't compete with them on evidence.
Jujube seed (suan zao ren) is Poria's classical partner for sleep - the two appear together in traditional formulas, and together in the one modern sleep trial we have.
Chamomile, lemon balm and valerian are the familiar Western equivalents for evening calm, and again have more direct study.
Poria's real distinction isn't potency. It's the fluid-and-digestion angle, which none of the above share.
Poria vs the culinary mushrooms
Lion's Mane, shiitake and maitake are mushrooms you eat for their own sake, with flavour and texture as part of the point. Poria is closer to a herb: bland, dense, and used in small amounts inside something else.
Fu Ling: the most-used herb you've never heard of
Ten percent of a pharmacopoeia
If you had to name the single most quietly important herb in Chinese medicine, Fu Ling would be a serious candidate. Roughly one in ten of the medicinal preparations listed in the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China contains it. It has been in continuous documented use for around two thousand years, and it sits inside some of the oldest formulas still prescribed today.
The classics
Fu Ling is written into the foundational texts. Wu Ling San ('Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria') and Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan ('Cinnamon Twig and Poria Pill') both trace to Zhang Zhongjing's Han-dynasty writings, roughly 1,800 years ago. Si Jun Zi Tang - the base digestive tonic that hundreds of later formulas are built on - has Poria as one of its four ingredients.
That's the pattern. Poria is almost never the star. It was designed to be combined
In its own tradition Poria is a formula ingredient, and formulas are built around individuals. If you're seeing a TCM practitioner, the useful conversation isn't 'should I take Poria' but 'which part, in which formula, for which pattern.' Fu Ling, fu shen and fu ling pi are used differently.
Water versus alcohol changes what you get
Poria's polysaccharides are water-soluble. Most of its triterpenes are not. A traditional decoction is essentially a polysaccharide preparation; an ethanolic extract is essentially a triterpene preparation. Health Canada's monograph treats them as genuinely different products with different ceilings - up to 18 g/day of dried material as a decoction, but no more than 3.6 g/day as a dry powder or ethanolic extract. If a label doesn't tell you which kind of preparation it is, you don't really know what you're taking.
The classical contraindications are specific, and pattern-based
Health Canada's monograph asks anyone with yin deficiency, sunken spleen qi, or cold-from-deficiency with spermatorrhea to consult a practitioner before use. The Chinese Pharmacopoeia separately lists frequent urination, spermatorrhea and urogenital prolapse as contraindications. These are diagnostic judgements within a traditional framework - not something you can reliably self-assess from a web page.
Timing
The monograph's stated direction for use, following Bensky's Materia Medica, is to take Poria before meals.
Prolonged use
Health Canada asks you to consult a health care practitioner for prolonged use. Given how little long-term human data exists, that's a sensible default rather than a formality.

There is a real effect here, but the scale is wrong. Poria's diuretic action has been shown in rats - increased urine output, increased sodium and chloride excretion, and a proposed mechanism involving renal aquaporin-2 - not in controlled human trials. Health Canada requires the modest statement 'diuretic effect may occur' on labels, which is the appropriate level of confidence. Traditionally Fu Ling is described as gentle and slow, used over time and inside formulas, not as something you take for an acute fluid problem. They're different species, different families and different tissue. Reishi is Ganoderma lucidum, in the Ganodermataceae; Poria is Wolfiporia extensa (formerly Poria cocos), in the Polyporaceae. They share an order, Polyporales, which is roughly the level of relatedness of a cat and a walrus. More practically: reishi is a fruiting body that grows on the outside of wood and is intensely bitter, while Poria is a sclerotium - a dense underground storage mass on pine roots - that is bland enough to be baked into cakes. Longevity of use tells you something real - that a substance is unlikely to be acutely harmful, and that generations of practitioners found it useful enough to keep reaching for. It doesn't tell you that it works in the way a modern trial would measure, and it certainly doesn't tell you that it works on its own. Poria's traditional record is a record of formulas: it appears in roughly one in ten preparations in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, almost always combined with several other herbs and matched to an individual pattern. Independent reference sources reviewing the modern literature conclude that clinical studies are lacking to recommend Poria for any indication, and that trials of multi-herb preparations can't be used to judge Poria alone. The one reasonable human sleep trial used a four-week course of a combination containing Poria, jujube seed and GABA, and reported gradual improvement in sleep quality over weeks; nothing about it resembles taking a sleeping tablet. There's also a detail traditional practice cares about that most products ignore: the calming role belongs specifically to fu shen, the core of the sclerotium grown around the pine root, not to Poria generally. That checklist works for Lion's Mane and turkey tail. It doesn't transfer to Poria. Poria almost never fruits, and no commercial Poria is fruiting-body material - what's sold is the sclerotium, the underground mass, which is the part every classical text specifies anyway. And chasing a high beta-glucan number misses the point: Poria's native beta-glucan, pachyman, is fairly inert in laboratory tests until it's chemically modified, and much of Poria's traditional activity is attributed to its triterpenes, which a beta-glucan figure doesn't measure at all. The genuinely useful questions for Poria are different: which part of the sclerotium, and is it a water extract or an alcohol extract - because those pull out different compounds and Health Canada sets different dose limits for each. How to use it
Common forms
How much
The right dose depends entirely on how the Poria was prepared, and Health Canada's monograph is unusually clear about this. Dry powder or non-standardised ethanolic extracts: do not exceed 3.6 g of dried material per day, with 1.6-3.6 g/day given for herbal-medicine immune support. It's a sclerotium, not a fruiting body. Poria almost never fruits, so 'fruiting body extract' claims are a red flag, not a mark of quality. The underground sclerotium is the correct and traditional part.
Water extract or alcohol extract? This is the most important question on the label. Water pulls out polysaccharides; alcohol pulls out triterpenes. They aren't the same product, and Health Canada sets very different dose limits for each (18 g/day for a decoction versus 3.6 g/day for a powder or ethanolic extract).
Don't chase a beta-glucan number. Poria's native beta-glucan, pachyman, shows little activity in lab tests until it's chemically modified - so a high beta-glucan figure tells you less here than it would for Lion's Mane or turkey tail.
Origin and testing. China grows most of the world's supply; Yunnan-grown material ('Yun Ling') is traditionally regarded as the top grade, and analytical work has found real regional differences in polysaccharide and extractable content. As with any root-zone-grown material, look for third-party heavy-metal testing.

Its traditional roles are to promote urination and drain dampness, fortify the spleen, and calm the heart. In Canada, Health Canada has a dedicated monograph for it permitting immune-support, fungal-polysaccharide and antioxidant claims alongside those traditional-use statements.
Bland, faintly sweet, slightly earthy - genuinely one of the most neutral things in the herbal cabinet. That's a feature, not a flaw: it's why Poria has been used as food for centuries. Traditionally it's simmered into soups and congee, decocted with other herbs, or milled into flour for fu ling cakes, a classic Beijing snack. As a modern powder or extract, half a teaspoon to a teaspoon stirred into broth, soup, congee or tea is the usual approach; it will disappear into anything savoury. Health Canada's monograph, following Bensky's Materia Medica, says to take it before meals. One practical note: a traditional water decoction and an alcohol extract pull out different compounds - polysaccharides in the first case, triterpenes in the second - so they aren't interchangeable.
It might, and Health Canada requires products to say so - the monograph's known adverse reaction statement is simply 'diuretic effect may occur.' How strong that effect is in people is genuinely unknown. The measurable work is in rats: ethanol and aqueous extracts increased urine output, one study reported increased sodium and chloride excretion, and another proposed a mechanism involving suppressed renal aquaporin-2, a water channel the kidney uses to reabsorb water. No controlled human trial has quantified this at an ordinary dose. Traditionally the effect is described as gentle and gradual rather than sharp. If you notice you're urinating markedly more, that's a reasonable reason to reduce the dose or stop.
Traditionally, yes - the Chinese Pharmacopoeia lists it for 'disquietude of heart spirit' and insomnia, and Health Canada permits that traditional-use wording. Modern evidence is thinner than the marketing suggests. The best study is a 2024 randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 70 adults with poor sleep, published in Food Science & Nutrition, using a daily preparation of Poria, jujube seed (Ziziphus spinosa) and GABA for four weeks; measured sleep duration and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores both improved. The catch is that it tested three ingredients together, two of which have their own sleep reputations, so we can't credit Poria for the result. It is also not sedating - it won't make you drowsy the way a sleep aid does. If you're interested in Poria for sleep specifically, the traditionally indicated part is fu shen, the core of the sclerotium grown around the pine root.

You can taste the difference immediately, since reishi is notoriously bitter and Poria is bland. Their traditional jobs differ as well: reishi is taken as a headline calming tonic in its own right, while Poria is a formula ingredient used mainly for fluid and digestion. If you want the better-researched calming mushroom, that's reishi. If you want the classical Chinese formula herb, that's Poria.
Poria has a reassuring safety profile: it has been eaten as a food for centuries, reports of adverse events are essentially absent from the literature, and no toxicology signal has been identified. Health Canada's monograph requires only two statements - stop use if hypersensitivity or allergy occurs, and diuretic effect may occur - and asks anyone with yin deficiency, sunken spleen qi, or cold-from-deficiency with spermatorrhea to consult a practitioner first. The modern evidence. The diuretic work is in rats. The immune work is largely in cells, often using chemically modified polysaccharides rather than the plain thing. The one decent sleep trial tested a three-ingredient combination, not Poria alone. Independent reviewers who go looking for clinical evidence on Poria by itself keep reaching the same conclusion: there isn't enough of it to recommend Poria for any specific indication.

A reasonable, gentle, traditional ingredient with a real history and a thin modern file. If you take it, take it for the tradition and for the mild fluid-and-digestion role it has always had - ideally as part of a formula - and keep your expectations proportionate. Anyone promising dramatic results from Poria on its own is well ahead of the evidence.
