How to prepare nutrient agar

Directions:

  1. Prepare the Mixture:

    • Pour the entire package (10 grams) into a saucepan or a heat-resistant glass measuring cup.
    • Add 500ml (approximately 2 cups) of water.
    • Stir thoroughly until fully dissolved.
  2. Heat the Mixture:

    • Stovetop: Heat slowly over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until it just begins to boil.
    • Microwave: Heat in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until the mixture starts to bubble or boil.
  3. Pour & Cool:

    • Once boiling, carefully pour the mixture into petri dishes.
    • Allow it to cool and solidify before use.

⚠️ Important for Mycology:

  • To ensure sterility, the mixture must be pressure sterilized in an autoclave or pressure cooker before pouring into petri dishes.
