History & natural history
Super 7 has no ancient history, and we'd rather say so than invent one. It is a modern product - Ecogenya's flagship daily blend, made in Ontario - and the interesting history belongs to the seven mushrooms in it, each of which has its own entry in this library.
Where the idea of a blend actually comes from
Combining mushrooms is not a traditional practice in the way people assume. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, formulas absolutely combine herbs - but they do so according to a specific logic of chief, deputy, assistant and envoy ingredients, chosen for a particular pattern in a particular person, and adjusted over time. That is not what a fixed seven-mushroom blend is. Multi-mushroom supplements are a Western retail invention of the last few decades, and their real driver was practical rather than pharmacological: it is easier to sell one jar than seven, and easier to buy one.
What each of the seven brought with it
The traditions they arrive from are genuinely different from one another, which is worth noticing. Reishi is the Ling Zhi of the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing, classed among the superior herbs and taken as a long, slow tonic. Cordyceps entered the Chinese materia medica in the 18th century as a warming lung and kidney tonic, by way of Tibetan medicine. Turkey tail is Yun Zhi, the cloud mushroom, simmered as a bitter decoction. Shiitake was food first and tonic second, farmed on hardwood logs for a thousand years. Maitake was a Japanese tonic food, valuable enough that a good cluster was said to be worth its weight in silver. Lion's Mane was a stomach and digestion tonic long before anyone connected it to the brain. Chaga isn't in the Chinese tradition at all - it belongs to the northern boreal, chipped from birch trunks across Siberia, Scandinavia and Canada and simmered into a winter tea.
So a seven-mushroom blend is not the continuation of a tradition. It is a bringing-together of several unrelated ones, plus one that never met the others, into a format none of them used.
The modern turn
What made blends possible was cultivation and extraction. Reishi was effectively unavailable until growers in Japan and China worked out log and sawdust cultivation in the 1970s. Cordyceps militaris only became affordable when someone realised it would grow happily on grain in a lab. Maitake's commercial cultivation scaled up over the last few decades. Once all seven could be grown reliably and extracted consistently, putting them in one jar became a manufacturing decision rather than a herbal one.
Why we built this page the way we did
The blend category has more marketing per gram than almost anything else in supplements, largely because 'seven mushrooms' sounds like seven times something. It isn't. We think the genuinely useful thing we can offer is not another origin myth but a clear-eyed account of the trade-off - what a blend is good at, what it isn't, and how to decide. That's what the rest of this page is.
The science, graded honestly
We grade the evidence for every use so you can see the difference between "proven," "promising," and "traditional."
## The shared mechanism: beta-glucans
Whatever else separates these seven mushrooms, they share one family of compounds - beta-glucans, the structural sugars in fungal cell walls. Your immune cells have receptors, notably Dectin-1, that recognise these as a fungal signature. That recognition is what 'immunomodulating' means, and it's the mechanism behind the one claim every mushroom in this blend contributes to.
It's worth being precise about the word. Immunomodulating means your immune system registers something and adjusts. It does not mean 'boosted', and a boosted immune system isn't a goal anyone should actually want - that's what autoimmune disease is. The honest framing is background support, not amplification.
## Why extraction matters more than the mushroom list
Beta-glucans are locked inside chitin, which human digestion handles poorly. Hot water is what frees them, which is why every traditional preparation of these mushrooms was a long simmer, and why hot-water extraction is the standard today. Alcohol pulls out a different set - the triterpenes, mostly relevant to reishi and chaga. A dual extract gets both.
This has a regulatory consequence that surprises people: because polysaccharides dissolve poorly in alcohol, Health Canada does not permit the 'source of fungal polysaccharides with immunomodulating properties' claim, or the herbal-medicine immune claim, on any preparation made with ethanol. That's why our tincture and our powder carry different wording despite containing the same seven mushrooms.
## Where the concentration comes from
Our Super 7 is dual extracted at a combined 17:1 ratio and standardised to more than 35% beta-glucans. The extract ratio is doing real work: it means a modest scoop represents considerably more raw mushroom than its weight suggests, which is how a blend can carry claims that have gram-level dose requirements attached to them.
What the extract ratio cannot do is change the arithmetic of division. Seven mushrooms sharing one scoop each get about a seventh of it. A concentrated seventh is still a seventh.
## How Health Canada actually handles a blend
This is the part that clarifies everything else. The mushrooms monograph explicitly covers multi-ingredient products, but it sets doses and claims per medicinal ingredient - not per formula. Each species in a blend has to independently reach its own dose range for the claim being made, and the required safety warnings accumulate: the label must carry the union of the cautions for all seven.
There is no synergy allowance anywhere in the monograph. No credit is given for combining species, and there is no claim a blend can make that its individual ingredients could not. Regulators, in other words, treat a blend as seven mushrooms in a jar. So do we.
Immune support
Reasonably supportedThis is the claim our Super 7 label actually leads with, so it deserves the most careful handling on the page. Health Canada permits two separate things here, and they are not the same thing. The first is 'source of fungal polysaccharides with immunomodulating properties' - a compositional statement that applies to every mushroom in the monograph, and which is really a statement about what is in the jar rather than what it does to you. The second is 'used in Herbal Medicine to support the immune system,' which is a genuine use claim but is granted to only three of our seven: reishi, maitake and shiitake. Lion's Mane, chaga, cordyceps and turkey tail contribute nothing to that particular sentence.
What sits underneath it is real but modest. Beta-glucans are recognised by pattern-recognition receptors on immune cells, principally Dectin-1, and this is well established in laboratory and animal work. Human trials exist for several of these species individually - small ones, mostly running four to twelve weeks, mostly measuring immune markers in blood rather than whether anyone got fewer colds. Maitake's human work at Memorial Sloan Kettering, for instance, produced genuinely nuanced results, with some immune measures rising and others falling. That is a long way from 'takes care of your immune system,' and we won't compress it into that.
The blend-specific point is the one nobody makes. Each of the three claim-carrying species is present at roughly a seventh of a serving, and Health Canada's dose ranges for the herbal-medicine immune claim are gram-level: 1.6-7 g a day of dried maitake, 1.6-6 g a day of dried shiitake, 3-15 g a day of reishi as an aqueous extract. A blend can reach those figures only because it is a concentrated extract - the 17:1 ratio means the dried-mushroom equivalent behind each seventh is far larger than the powder weight. That is legitimate, it is how the licence was granted, and it is also worth understanding rather than taking on faith.
The honest read: what you can reasonably expect is a broad, gentle, well-characterised source of immunomodulating polysaccharides taken daily over months. What you should not expect is to notice anything happening, or to be protected from anything. Immune support is a background claim, and background is what it feels like.

PreliminaryThis is the most important entry on the page and the one you will find nowhere else on a blend product, so here it is plainly. There is no clinical trial comparing a multi-mushroom blend against a single well-dosed mushroom in people. Not a small one, not a flawed one - the comparison has not been run. Every human study behind every mushroom in this blend used one species, at one dose, on its own. When a brand tells you their blend is more effective than a single extract, they are not citing evidence, because there isn't any to cite.
What is often offered instead is a mechanism argument: different mushrooms contain different beta-glucan structures and different secondary compounds, so together they should engage more receptors and cover more ground. That argument is reasonable on its face, and it may well prove correct. But 'biologically plausible' and 'demonstrated' are different categories, and the whole point of this library is to keep them apart. Plausibility is where a hypothesis starts, not where it finishes.
The counter-argument deserves equal airtime, and it is arithmetic rather than theory. A fixed daily serving divided seven ways gives each mushroom about a seventh of the amount a single-mushroom product would deliver. Every dose-response signal we have in this category points the same way: the cordyceps exercise trials that found nothing used 1-2 g a day, while the ones that found something used 3-4.5 g. If dose matters - and in the trials that exist, it plainly does - then division is a real cost, and it has to be weighed against a benefit that has never been measured.
Regulators land in the same place. Health Canada's mushrooms monograph explicitly covers multi-ingredient products, but it assesses doses and claims per medicinal ingredient rather than per formula, offers no combination allowance, and grants a blend no claim its individual ingredients could not make alone. There is no synergy provision anywhere in the document.
So the honest position: a blend is a coverage strategy with a real and defensible logic - breadth, simplicity, and the fact that people actually keep taking one jar - and it is not a potency strategy. Buy it for the first reason. Nobody has earned the right to sell it to you on the second.

Well establishedThis is the one claim on the page that is genuinely settled - and also the one most often oversold, so it is worth being clear about what 'well established' means here. It means the antioxidant content is established. Health Canada permits 'provides antioxidants that help protect cells against the oxidative damage caused by free radicals' for every mushroom in the monograph, with no species-specific evidence required, because the chemistry is not in dispute. That is a compositional claim, and it is true.
A blend has a fair argument in this specific area, and it's worth noting because it is the exception rather than the rule on this page. Antioxidant capacity is broadly additive: seven mushrooms bring seven overlapping sets of polyphenols, melanins and phenolic acids, and unlike the immune claims there is no minimum dose threshold any single species has to clear. Chaga in particular is unusually rich here - its melanin and polyphenol content scores extremely high on laboratory antioxidant assays - and it contributes that even at a seventh of a serving.
Now the caveat, which matters. Those famous laboratory antioxidant scores measure activity in a test tube. They do not tell you what happens after digestion, absorption and metabolism, which is precisely why the USDA withdrew its own ORAC antioxidant database in 2012, citing the routine misuse of the numbers in marketing. A high antioxidant score on paper is not evidence of a health outcome in a person, and anyone quoting ORAC figures at you in 2026 either doesn't know that or is hoping you don't.
The honest read: yes, this blend is a real source of dietary antioxidants, and the claim is legitimate. No, that does not mean it does anything you will feel, and it is not a reason on its own to choose mushrooms over the vegetables, berries, tea and coffee already doing this job in your diet.

Traditional useOur Super 7 label carries the wording 'used in Herbal Medicine as an adaptogen to help increase energy and resistance to stress in cases of mental and physical fatigue related to stress.' It is a real, licensed claim, and it is also the single most misread sentence on the package - so here is exactly where it comes from.
It comes from reishi. Not from the blend, not from cordyceps, and not from any collective property of seven mushrooms. Ganoderma lucidum is the only species in Health Canada's mushrooms monograph granted an adaptogen claim, at 1.5-6 g a day of dried material or 3-15 g a day as an aqueous extract. Cordyceps, despite its entire reputation resting on stamina and athletic performance, is granted no energy claim at all in Canada - its only species-specific permitted claim is a Traditional Chinese Medicine one about tonifying the lungs and kidneys. If you bought this blend for energy, it is reishi's paperwork you are relying on, which is not what most people assume.
The grade here is 'traditional use' deliberately, and the phrasing of the claim tells you why. 'Used in Herbal Medicine' is Health Canada's signal that a claim rests on a documented historical record rather than on clinical trials. Reishi's record is genuinely long and genuinely well documented - it appears in the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing among the superior herbs, the class described as tonics for steady long-term use rather than remedies for acute illness - but that is history, not a randomised trial. The modern human evidence for reishi and fatigue is thin and mixed.
And there is a specific expectation to manage. 'Adaptogen' does not mean stimulant. There is no caffeine here and no acute lift; if you feel something in the first hour, that is the coffee you stirred it into. The traditional and modern framing agree on this point: it is a slow background ingredient, taken daily across weeks and months, and the honest test is whether a hard season feels marginally less hard by the end of it - not whether your Tuesday improved.

Traditional use'Liver tonic' appears on our Super 7 label, and it is a phrase that invites more misreading than any other on the package - so let's take it apart. Like the adaptogen claim, it belongs to reishi alone. Health Canada permits 'used in Herbal Medicine as a liver tonic' for Ganoderma lucidum at 1.5-6 g a day of dried material, and grants it to none of the other six mushrooms in this blend. It is a traditional-use claim, which is what 'used in Herbal Medicine' signals: a documented historical record, not clinical proof.
What a tonic meant historically is not what 'detox' means in modern marketing, and the gap between them is where most of the confusion lives. In herbal traditions a tonic was something taken steadily over long periods to support an organ's ordinary functioning, not to purge or repair it. Your liver is already an extremely capable detoxification system that requires no assistance from a supplement, and any product promising to cleanse it is selling you a story. Nothing in the Health Canada wording implies otherwise, and neither do we.
There is a caution here that matters more than the claim. Reishi's liver record is not uniformly benign: there are rare but real published case reports linking powdered reishi to liver injury, including one fatal case of fulminant hepatitis, and notably those patients had used traditionally boiled reishi without incident before switching to powder. The exposure from a seventh-share of a blend is small, but the principle stands - if you have liver disease, drink heavily, or take medication processed by the liver, this is a conversation for your practitioner. Stop immediately and seek advice if you develop nausea with dark urine or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
The honest read: a legitimate, licensed traditional-use claim, resting on one of the seven mushrooms, meaning gentle long-term support rather than anything active. If liver health is your actual concern, this is not the product to be thinking about - that is a medical conversation, not a supplement one.

Emerging but limitedThis is the area of functional-mushroom research moving fastest, and the one where a blend has the most intuitively appealing argument - so it needs the most careful framing, because the human evidence has not caught up with the enthusiasm.
The mechanism is sound and easy to state. Beta-glucans are fibres your own enzymes cannot break down, so they travel through the small intestine largely intact and reach the colon, where gut bacteria can ferment them. That is the textbook definition of prebiotic behaviour. It also connects tidily to the immune story on this page, because a large share of the body's immune tissue lines the intestine - which means 'immune support' and 'gut support' may turn out to be two descriptions of the same interaction rather than two separate benefits. Turkey tail has attracted the most attention here, with small human work suggesting shifts in gut bacterial populations, and shiitake and maitake have been studied in animals.
The blend argument, for once, is not unreasonable. Different mushrooms carry structurally different beta-glucans, and gut bacteria are fussy about structure - different species ferment different fibres. A wider variety of fibre is, in general nutritional terms, better for a microbiome than a narrow one. That is a genuine, if indirect, point in a blend's favour, and it is the closest thing to a real synergy argument anywhere on this page.
But hold it loosely. The human studies are few, small and short; most measure changes in bacterial populations rather than whether anyone felt better or was healthier; and none of them tested a seven-mushroom blend. Health Canada permits no gut, digestive or microbiome claim for any mushroom in this monograph, which is why you will not see one on our label. Treat this section as the most interesting unfinished business in the category - a good reason to watch the research, and not yet a reason to buy anything.

A blend is only as good as its parts, so here is what each of the seven brings - and, just as importantly, what it doesn't. Each of these has its own full entry in this library if you want to go deeper.
Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus)
The one people know from the internet, and the one with the most interesting unfinished story. Its hericenones have been linked in laboratory work to nerve growth factor, and a small 16-week Japanese trial in older adults with mild memory decline is the study everyone cites. It's genuinely promising and genuinely unproven - and worth knowing that Health Canada grants Lion's Mane no cognitive, memory or focus claim at all. In the blend it contributes beta-glucans and the antioxidant side of the label, and nothing more that we're permitted to say.
Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum)
The workhorse of this particular blend from a regulatory point of view. Reishi is the only one of the seven that Health Canada permits a liver tonic and an adaptogen claim for, and it also carries a herbal-medicine immune claim. That means the 'adaptogen' and 'liver tonic' wording on our Super 7 label is reishi's contribution, not the blend's collective achievement. Traditionally it's the evening, long-haul tonic - the mushroom you take through a hard season rather than a hard week.
Cordyceps militaris
The cultivated orange species, not the rare and expensive wild caterpillar fungus of the legends. It carries cordycepin and adenosine, and it has a small body of human exercise research behind its stamina reputation - though the trials that found anything used 3-4.5 g a day of cordyceps on its own. Health Canada permits no energy or performance claim for it; the only species-specific claim is a Traditional Chinese Medicine one about the lungs and kidneys.
Chaga (Inonotus obliquus)
The birch canker. It brings melanin, polyphenols and the dark, faintly vanilla, coffee-like note you can taste in the blend. Chaga has the thinnest human evidence of the seven and the tightest dose ceiling - Health Canada caps it at 3.6 g a day of dried material, and unusually that ceiling doesn't rise for water extracts. That limit exists for a concrete reason: chaga is very high in oxalates, and published case reports link months of heavy daily use to kidney injury. Being one-seventh of a blend is, if anything, a point in its favour here.
Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor)
The most clinically studied mushroom of the seven, though almost all of that work is on PSK - a purified pharmaceutical fraction that has been a prescription adjunct in Japan since 1977, and which a supplement cannot inherit. What turkey tail actually brings to a blend is beta-glucans, in quantity; it's one of the richest sources in the group. Its Health Canada claim is a TCM one about fortifying the spleen, and it applies only to decoctions.
Maitake (Grifola frondosa)
Hen of the woods. One of only three mushrooms in this blend that Health Canada permits a herbal-medicine immune claim for, at 1.6-7 g a day. It's also the reason our label carries a diabetes caution: the monograph requires that warning on any product providing 150 mg or more of dried maitake powder per day, which is a very low threshold that a blend clears easily.
Shiitake (Lentinula edodes)
The dinner mushroom that also happens to carry a permitted immune claim. It brings the beta-glucan lentinan and the compound eritadenine, and it's the most food-like of the seven - people have been eating it for a thousand years, which is a kind of safety record in itself. It's also why our label mentions blood thinners: shiitake is the one species in the monograph that triggers that specific required warning.
What the seven do not do
You'll notice something missing from all of that: any explanation of how these seven work better together. That's because nobody has shown that they do. See 'How it compares' below - it's the most useful section on this page.
Who it's for
A good fit if
You don't have one specific goal. You want mushrooms in your routine as general, everyday background support, and you're not chasing a particular outcome.
You want one habit, not seven. A shelf of jars is a shelf you stop using. The blend you actually take every morning beats the perfect single extract you forget about.
You're new to functional mushrooms and want to meet the category. Super 7 is a reasonable place to start before deciding whether one of them is worth pursuing properly.
You cook or drink your supplements. Seven mushrooms give a rounder, more balanced flavour than most single extracts - earthy and lightly savoury, with a dark-cocoa note from the chaga.
Cost and simplicity matter to you. One product covering the category is cheaper than seven, and you won't waste jars you only half-finish.
Probably not the right choice if
You have one clear goal. If you're specifically interested in Lion's Mane for the cognitive research, or cordyceps for the exercise trials, buy that mushroom on its own and dose it properly. A seventh of a serving is not what any of those studies used.
You're trying to replicate a study. Every human trial on these mushrooms tested one species at one dose. A blend is not a smaller version of that trial - it's a different thing entirely.
You have kidney disease or a history of kidney stones. Chaga is high in oxalates, and while a seventh-share is a modest exposure, we'd rather you chose a blend without it or spoke to your practitioner first.
You take blood thinners, diabetes medication or immunosuppressants. Not a hard no, but a blend means seven sets of possible interactions rather than one, and that's a harder conversation to have with your prescriber. A single mushroom is easier to assess.
You're pregnant or breastfeeding. There isn't enough safety data on any of these at supplement doses.
The honest summary
A blend is a coverage decision, not a potency decision. If breadth and simplicity are what you want, it's an excellent answer. If depth is what you want, it isn't - and no amount of marketing changes that.
Blend vs single extract - how to choose
This is the decision that actually matters, and most of the industry avoids answering it honestly. Here's our attempt.
The trade-off, stated plainly
A daily serving is a fixed amount of powder. Put one mushroom in it and that mushroom gets all of it. Put seven in and each gets roughly a seventh. That is the entire trade-off, and no formulation trick removes it.
So the concrete comparison is this: a scoop of our single Lion's Mane extract delivers around seven times as much Lion's Mane as the same scoop of Super 7. The single-mushroom human trials - the 16-week Lion's Mane memory study, the cordyceps exercise studies, the maitake immune work - all used one mushroom at a full dose. A blend does not reproduce those conditions, and we won't pretend it does.
What you get in exchange
Breadth. Seven different beta-glucan structures, seven different secondary-compound profiles, and a spread of Health Canada's permitted uses rather than one. If you genuinely don't know which mushroom you want, a blend means you're not guessing wrong. And there's a real, unglamorous benefit that no study measures: people stick with one jar far more reliably than seven.
Choose the blend when
You want general, everyday coverage rather than a targeted result.
Simplicity is what will keep you consistent.

You want to know, after eight weeks, whether that mushroom did anything for you. You can't learn that from a blend.
A third option most people miss
They aren't mutually exclusive, and the sensible compromise is often both: a blend as your daily baseline, plus one single extract at a full dose for whatever you actually care about. That gives you the breadth without diluting the one that matters. It costs more than a blend alone and a good deal less than seven jars.
On synergy
You will read that mushroom blends are 'synergistic' - that the seven amplify each other. It's a lovely idea and it may even turn out to be true. But no trial has compared a multi-mushroom blend against a single well-dosed mushroom in people, so at present it is a hypothesis, not a finding. Health Canada gives no credit for it either: the monograph assesses every ingredient separately and offers no combination bonus. We'd rather tell you that than sell you a mechanism nobody has demonstrated.
Super 7 vs a cheap blend
Where blends differ most is not the species list - almost everyone uses roughly the same seven - but the material. A blend built from mycelium grown on grain carries the grain with it, which is why cheap blends test high in starch and low in beta-glucans. Compare the stated beta-glucan percentage, not the number of mushrooms or the milligram count. That single number tells you more than the ingredient list does.

Species count is a marketing number, not a potency measure. Adding an eighth or a tenth mushroom to the same daily serving doesn't add anything - it just divides the same powder into smaller shares. The number that actually tells you about potency is the beta-glucan percentage, together with whether the material is fruiting body or mycelium grown on grain. A twelve-mushroom blend at 8% beta-glucans is a weaker product than a three-mushroom blend at 35%, every time. 'Synergy' in mushroom marketing is a hypothesis dressed as a finding. The idea is reasonable - different species carry different beta-glucan structures and different secondary compounds, so in principle they could engage more receptors between them - but nobody has tested it in a human trial, and plausible is not the same as proven. The one place the argument has some genuine footing is the gut, where a wider variety of fermentable fibre is generally better for a microbiome than a narrow one. The regulated wording is 'immunomodulating', and the difference isn't pedantry. Modulating means your immune system registers something and adjusts; boosting implies turning it up, which is neither achievable with a supplement nor desirable - an overactive immune system is what autoimmune disease is. Health Canada permits 'source of fungal polysaccharides with immunomodulating properties' and, for reishi, maitake and shiitake specifically, 'used in Herbal Medicine to support the immune system'. The species list is the part that's nearly identical across brands; almost everyone uses roughly the same seven. What differs enormously is the material. A blend built from mycelium grown on grain is sold with the grain still in it, which is why those products test high in starch and often in single digits for beta-glucans, while fruiting-body extracts land far higher. Extraction matters too - beta-glucans only come out in hot water, so unextracted milled powder gives you much less regardless of what's on the label. Compare the stated beta-glucan percentage, check for fruiting body, and look for third-party testing with a published certificate of analysis. Our licensed Super 7: adults 18 and over, 1 scoop of powder or 1 capsule (1000 mg) once a day, with food. Taking it with food is Health Canada's requirement for anything containing reishi, not just a suggestion. Why a blend is dosed lower than a single mushroom. Health Canada sets ceilings per species, not per product, and each mushroom in a blend must independently sit inside its own range for the claim being made. The per-day ceilings for our seven, as dried or powdered material, are: Cordyceps militaris 3 g, Chaga 3.6 g, Turkey Tail 5 g, Reishi 6 g, Shiitake 6 g, Maitake 7 g, Lion's Mane 2.8 g. Water-extract ceilings are higher for most of them - 15 g for reishi, 16 g for shiitake, 27 g for turkey tail, 12 g for Lion's Mane - but notably not for chaga, which stays at 3.6 g either way. How the numbers work out. Because Super 7 is a 17:1 concentrated extract, the dried-mushroom equivalent behind each seventh of a scoop is far larger than the powder weight - which is how the blend reaches the gram-level ranges the immune, adaptogen and liver tonic claims require. What it can't do is beat the arithmetic: compared with a full serving of a single extract, each species is at roughly a seventh. Timing and consistency. There's no stimulant, so morning or evening both work. Consistency matters far more than the exact scoop - the human trials across these species that found anything ran four to sixteen weeks of daily use. Give it two months before judging it. And if you also take a single-mushroom product, add the two together before checking against the ceilings above; chaga is the easiest one to overshoot.

Almost every seven-mushroom blend on the market uses roughly the same seven species, so the ingredient list tells you very little. Five things that actually separate them:
Beta-glucans, as a stated percentage. This is the whole game. 'Polysaccharides' is a wider word that includes starch, so a grain-grown product can post a big polysaccharide number that is mostly leftover rice. Ours is standardised to over 35%. Single-digit beta-glucans are common in cheap blends.
Fruiting body, not mycelium-on-grain. Mycelium products are grown on grain and sold with the substrate still in them, which is the usual reason a blend tests low in beta-glucans and high in starch. If a label doesn't say fruiting body, assume it isn't.
Extracted, and how. Beta-glucans only come out in hot water; alcohol pulls the triterpenes. Unextracted milled powder leaves most of the actives locked behind chitin cell walls. Look for a stated extraction method and ratio, not just '10:1'.
Ignore the species count. Ten mushrooms in the same scoop is not more potent than seven - it's the same powder divided into smaller shares. Species count is a marketing number.
Third-party tested, with a published COA. Mushrooms concentrate whatever is in their substrate, so heavy-metal testing isn't optional. A beta-glucan figure nobody verified is just a number on a bag.
And one question worth asking yourself before you buy any blend: do I actually have a specific goal? If you do, a single extract at a full dose will serve you better.

A common middle path is a blend as your baseline plus one single extract, properly dosed, for the thing you actually care about.
That depends on what you're asking it to do. For the claims on our label - antioxidants, fungal polysaccharides, and the immune, adaptogen and liver tonic wording - yes: Health Canada assessed the product and issued NPNs 80137461 and 80138119, which means each species independently met the dose range required for the claim being made. That's possible because it's a 17:1 concentrated extract, so the dried-mushroom equivalent behind each seventh is much larger than the powder weight. But for matching a specific single-mushroom study, no. A scoop of our standalone Lion's Mane delivers around seven times more Lion's Mane than a scoop of Super 7 does.
Longer than most people expect. Every mushroom in this blend is a slow background ingredient - there's no stimulant and nothing to feel on day one. The mushrooms are the same seven throughout; the differences are format and regulatory status. The Fantastic Fungi powder and capsules are licensed natural health products with NPNs, so they carry Health Canada's permitted claims. Gourmet powder and Daily capsules are made to the same extract specification but sold as foods, which means no health claims at all - a labelling difference, not a quality one. The tincture is triple-extracted and liquid; because alcohol is involved, Health Canada does not permit the polysaccharide or immune wording on any ethanolic preparation, so it reads differently by law rather than by formulation. A blend means the cautions of all seven mushrooms apply, not just one. Avoid it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding - there isn't enough safety data on any of these at supplement doses. Speak to your practitioner first if you take blood thinners (shiitake and reishi both trigger this caution), diabetes medication (maitake's threshold in the monograph is just 150 mg a day of dried powder, which any blend clears), or immunosuppressants, and if you have kidney disease or a history of kidney stones, because chaga is high in oxalates. Stop use if any hypersensitivity or allergy occurs, and skip it entirely if you have a known mushroom allergy. It's for adults 18 and over.

It's worth understanding where those come from. The liver tonic and adaptogen wording is reishi's, specifically. The immune-support wording rests on reishi, maitake and shiitake. The antioxidant and polysaccharide statements apply to all mushrooms. None of it is a claim about the blend as a formula - it is a sum of what the individual mushrooms are permitted to say.

- Read this as seven safety profiles, not one: The single most important thing about a blend is that the cautions of every mushroom in it apply. Below is the aggregate of what the seven bring with them.
- Pregnancy & breastfeeding: Health Canada requires a practitioner-consultation statement for Lion's Mane, cordyceps, chaga and turkey tail. There is no good safety data for any of the seven at supplement doses. Best avoided.
- Blood thinners & surgery: Shiitake is the species that triggers Health Canada's mandatory blood-thinner warning, and reishi and chaga carry their own bleeding-related cautions - reishi may prolong INR, PT and APTT and can skew those tests. Talk to your practitioner, and consider pausing before surgery.
- Diabetes & blood sugar medication: Health Canada requires a diabetes consultation statement on any product providing 150 mg or more a day of dried maitake powder, a threshold any blend clears easily. Chaga and Lion's Mane may also nudge glucose downward. Speak to your prescriber before starting; never adjust prescribed medication yourself.
- Kidney disease & kidney stones: Chaga is very high in soluble oxalate, and published case reports link months of heavy daily use to oxalate nephropathy. A seventh-share is a modest exposure, but if you have reduced kidney function or a stone history, avoid it or ask your practitioner first. Don't stack it with high-dose vitamin C.
- Immunosuppressants, transplant & autoimmune conditions: Fungal polysaccharides are immunomodulating, which works against what these medications are for. Not appropriate without medical advice.
- Liver: Rare but real published case reports link powdered reishi to liver injury. Avoid if you have liver disease or drink heavily, and stop immediately if you develop nausea with dark urine or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
- Mushroom allergy: Seven mushrooms means seven possible allergens. Health Canada requires a stop-use-if-hypersensitivity statement for reishi and shiitake. Skip the blend entirely if you have a known mushroom allergy.
- Cancer treatment & monitoring: Tell your oncology team about anything you take. Reishi spore powder can elevate the CA72-4 tumour marker and confuse test results. No mushroom is a cancer treatment.
- Getting started: Mild digestive upset in the first week is the most common complaint. Start at the low end and build up over a few days.
- Adults only: Health Canada's mushrooms monograph covers adults 18 and older. These species have not been studied in children.
The bottom line
Super 7 is a coverage product, and it's an honest one as long as you understand what coverage means.
